Giving Baby Tea??
« on: December 23, 2005, 18:40:56 pm »
Hi there!

I'm a US mom so this might seem like a no-brainer to all of you UK folks but do you give your little one's tea- black tea?

I am wondering if it is okay to do?  Why and why not?  What age?

Thanks!
Branwen

I don't know of any of my friends that give tea.  I would be concerned about the tannin and caffeine in tea.
This topic came up on another thread - tannin also affects the absorption of iron.

Hi

Alex is right - the tannin in tea stops children from absorbing iron properly, so it's not adviseable to give it to them. Plus the caffienes not such a good idea either (unless you like scrapping them off the ceiling when the stimulant high hits ;) ).

love
Marie

My fears confirmed! Thanks!!  No tea for little Eirwen just yet.

Can anyone recommend a warm (not hot of course) drink to give babies?  I bf still so the only other thing she gets is dilluted juice.  Warmed juice just doesn't sound good.

Warm juice is nice. It is what I have when I have a cold. But why are you looking for a warm drink for your LO? Her milk is warm  :)  Just curious since we stick to milk and water for DS (both cold except when he has the expressed milk DD refuses). He'll happily eat soup, gravy etc though.

My wee brother and sister in law got English breastfeast tea from the age of about 4 or five (when they started school).

They would get one little cup in the morning and they are still having their wee cuppa every day. They are now 12 and 13 and are fine and healthy.

OK, I live in the US now but am orginally from Germany and there they give their baby's fennel tea from one week on.  Its hard to find in an OK form here in the US, I brought some back from Germany with me and what it is really supposed to do is help with digestion so it worked really well for dd#1 and #2 for their initial gassiness.  Just FYI,

Rooibos tea is okay for babies (as far as the research I've done says). In South Africa, there is rooibos that is specifically for babies. I could always send you over some Branwen.  :)

We always have warm water (from kettle) with meals instead of cold (it is an Asian thing!  ) and warm juice with snacks.  She often wakes up with chilly hands so I give her a few sips of warm juice just to get her going.  They drink fennel tea a lot here too (you prob know that!  :) )
