Baby Swing Question
« on: December 27, 2005, 04:23:07 am »
My parents gave us one of those swing things for Christmas (with the best intention... they never read the book and don't understand the prop business). Milena is 6 weeks old today.
Question is- do any of you use one of these and is it possible to use this without it turning into a prop? I'm thinking of using it for the main floor of the house so she has an alternative to the laying down position and for activity time vs. putting her in it when she's crying (not always in swing mode but also as a "chair").

Oh, yeah, we definitely used it and it never became a prop (I think the trick is to use it for A time only).  It gave me a pair of free hands for about 10 minutes at a time, and really calmed my kiddo.  I hope she likes it!   :D

I agree that its a great thing to use for activity time. One in a while my LO would fall asleep in it and I'd just leave her, but it never became a prop. I think used properly a swing is not a bad thing at all, and most babies love them.

I agree - as long as you don't make a habit of sleeping in the swing - it is wonderful and most babies love it!
We used one and just now Caeden is getting too big for it.
Use it and ENJOY!

We used ours everyday during activity time for a few minutes in the morning, sort of a low-key relaxing activity to slowly wake up, as DS takes after his mommy, the "Crankiest Early Morning Person" I know of.  He wakes up early, doesn't need more sleep, but is just not happy and not fun to be around.

I was very worried about using our swing as I didn't want to create a dependancy on it.  However, it was one of the few things that stopped my DS from crying in the first few months. It saved my sanity.  We have now severely limited his time in the swing and there have been no dependancy issues.

i agree, swing away!  (provided it doesn't become a prop, the fact that you are thinking about it before even using it means it probably won't!
FWIW, swinging is actually REALLY good for babies and children that can tolerate it, it provides vestibular (or movement) input to the brain in much the same way that providing little black and white cards or soothing music for babies provides visual and auditory stimuli.  Movement intformation helps a baby figure out where they are in space, provided that they tolerate it well (you will know if they don't, i for example, STILL can't tolerate swinging, i get dizzy-as you can imagine i am a hoot at an amusement park!)
have fun!

we had a swing and a bouncy chair.

we would put andrew in it and he liked the swing (not so much the chair).  sometimes he would fall asleep and i would just leave him...

we didn't use it that often (maybe 2-3 times a week for half an hour at a time).

DS had a colicky period between 6 and 8 weeks--cried nonstop.  The only thing to calm him was the swing or a bath.  During that difficult time, I was sure that the swing would become a prop--that it would become the only way for him to stop crying.  But it didn't! It was a great relief to us when he was feeling bad and or was cranky for whatever reason.  And it's a great safe place for him to be if I need my two hands free to take care of something.
