When to switch to crib?
« on: December 27, 2005, 14:01:58 pm »
My 6 week old is currently sleeping in our room in a bassinet, when do I switch her over to her own room and crib? She (for the most part) has been sleeping 8 hours through the night with only one wake up and feed in the middle (has been since 4 weeks). Will she get too used to sleeping in our room even though she can't actually see us sleeping beside her?
And no, she's not an angel baby for sleeping long- she has her screaming hours before she falls asleep!

Also, anyone out there leave their bumper pads on the crib? I've heard mixed info- some say remove them as the baby can roll under them, some say they are fine until the baby can roll over, then remove them until they are older.

switch her whenever you feel like it.  i know my dd was gone at 3 weeks, and ds at 2!  but that was so I could sleep better.  truthfully, i think they did too.  i swear they both thought the basinette was too hard and the crib mattress was much nicer.

i have left the bumper pads in for both kids, and haven't any problems.  again, you can go either way.  many resources say to at least take them out when they are being used as steps towards getting out of the crib.

if your lo does seem to miss mommy being close by, you can tuck her into bed with something that smells like you; a receiving blanket, one of your shirts, etc.  just make sure you have worn it/slept with it so it truly smells like you.

We left Matthew in the bassinet in our room until he outgrew it at 4 months.  He slept in his room during the day so I could close the door on him etc.  He started the night in his room so DH could get home, get changed etc, and then once he had had the final feed before I went to sleep we moved him into our room so i could hear him for the night feeds.

With regards to the bumpers.  I felt that we needed them as he was such a nosy little chap that I needed to prevent him from seeing out.  SO I bought a length of co-ordinating fabric and sewed it to the bottom of the bumper.  I was therefore able to tuck this extra fabric under the mattress so there was no way that he was able to get underneath and get stuck.  It worked really well.

I kept mine in until 8 weeks or so. Monica was in there a longer time since we were in the midst of moving. DS outgrew it pretty quickly and I was ready for dd to be in her own room after 6 or 8 weeks. I definitely slept better! And though Monica stayed in the bassinet for awhile, she was in a different room at about 4 or 5 weeks.
Sounds like you are off to a good start!
Good luck!

DD was in her cot from day one and her own room too, we all slept better. With regards to the cot bumpers, you don't really need them but you can leave them as long as your little one is not moving, you will have to remove them though when your baby starts moving. I put nothing in dds crib from day one so she got attached to nothing and had nothing to remove or that she became attached to. I did introduce a soft rag doll when we got rid of the soother and thats it.

Thanks for the replys!
Great ideas for me to try for the transition.
As for the bumper pad I really like the idea of sewing another piece on- this would give me piece of mind and knowing her, she will need it to block out stimulation (there are 3 little bears hanging above her bassinet that I have to pull off for sleep and naps as she STARES at them and will not otherwise sleep!)

Hi - me again.

I just wanted to make it clear, before you go and add more material to the bottom of the bumpers.

I added fabric to the entire length of the bumper.

I didn't much off the width of the material (too lazy to start with), but when I first added the fabric, the cot mattress was at it's highest position.  Since the bumpers were safer later on even when he was rolling etc, a longer piece of material was necessary once the cot mattress was lowered when he could sit up. (by then it was just the fabric that blocked out light and there was no padding)

Hope that helps too.
