dropping the a.m. nap
« on: December 28, 2005, 03:17:08 am »
Hi.
I was wondering what i should look for when 9.5 mo old ds is ready to drop the a.m. nap... we've been kind of in a tailspin of sleep deprivation with the holidays and all...which means he's been a VERY early riser...finally last night, though, i put him to bed an hour earlier than i would normally (6pm--wooo the holidays are killers!) and he slept 12.5 hours (much to my joy and excitement)

ok all that being said, his a.m nap is hardly ever longer than about an hour or so...then the afternoon nap is 1.5 hours sometimes 2

pls advise,
jenni

Sounds fine to me :) I'd wait until your lo is wanting to stay up later and later in the am, or starts fighting the PM nap. Hold on to that 1st nap as long as possible :P

Here's what's happening, based on biorhythm research. Note that this doesn't work for ALL lo's, but the majority come close. Mine follows this research to the letter lol, but then she's as textbook as they come :P

If your lo gets plenty of sleep at night, the am nap is naturally shorter. It is theorized that the AM nap is actually an extension of night sleep, hence it's shorter.

During the PM nap, lo's usually get more deep sleep, hence why it's usually better to have a good PM nap. This nap is usually longer because of the longer period in deep sleep. Now, obviously this is the best circumstance to have (shorter am nap, longer PM nap), and under the best circumstances, when they do go down to 1 nap anytime between 10 months and 16 months, the one to keep is a PM nap, as it not only keeps them from getting fussy in the late afternoon, but they get good quality sleep.

BTW, earlier bedtimes often promote longer sleep times at night, sometimes 12+hours. If you have a long, rough weekend like this last weekend, putting them to bed earlier one night usually results in 12+ hours of sleep. Mine did that last night too (slept 13 hours), and she does it every time she has a few days of poor sleep, then is put to bed a little earlier than usual. It's a biorhythmical thing that can be confusing to wrap your brain around. I know I don't fully understand it...I just know it works!

Hope this info helps!
