NEWBORN MUMMY NEEDS HELP!
« on: December 28, 2005, 04:36:14 am »
during the day, my 5 day old will get over tired if i give him ANY activity time. i know that hes too young to really do any thing but eat and sleep, but tracy said start the easy routine at 4 days old. well, also, when i try to breast feed him, ( I can pump between 4 and 6 oz, both breasts combined, in about 10 or 15 min.) he only will eat for 3 min. or so, and then he wants to drift off to sleep, but he looks really awake, and then as I said, if i give him even 10 min or so of activity time he will wail his head off before bed and ill have to hold him through the three great crys tracy describes and shush him to sleep. Im having trouble because hes been spitting up frequently and then wanting more food in an hour. and then he goes to sleep but keeps waking up afterward. I cant figure out if he is eating too much or not enough. I think hes getting into a bad habbit of eating before bed, but at such an early age, I dont know if this is normal. I know ive only started trying this easy routine since yesterday, but it already seems like the bad habbits are kicking in, and it may be too late if i dont hurry. somebody please help!

For me with both my boys I just did a feed (one side) nappy change, offer other side & back to bed for about the first 3 weeks, Then I slowly introduced some A time
I don't think you need to worry too much at 5 days old. Try to feed on waking, but if he falls asleep feeding just let him...leave him on the breast until he comes off himself unless he stops sucking.

The only activity required for the first few weeks is a diaper change. Babies are supposed to eat and sleep the first few weeks. And remember that every baby is different!

Normal feeding activity ranges from 10-45 min, depending on your letdown. A newborn is very sleepy and you may need to encourage him to eat a little more than 3 minutes per feeding.
