When did your lo's sit unsupported
« on: December 31, 2005, 09:11:11 am »
I am wondering how to get my DD sitting unsupported,  she does brilliantly sitting in a bouncy chair and getting at her toys, she does well with pillows/cushions behind her.  I sit with her on the floor with one hand behind her back.  What else can I do?

What age did your lo's sit unsupported?

Both of mine sat at about 5 months, Ruby was steady from the start, but red needed a cushion or something behind him just in case for the first week or so.

ethan is 7 and a half months.  he has been sitting since he was five months BUT i still stick a cushion behind him for the (very) occasional time that he decides to see how closely we are watching him!
when do you get rid of that pillow?

I was wondering this same thing.  My DD is 7 1/2 months, and cannot sit unsupported.  I sit her in between my legs and she will rest on me, but when I let go, she starts tipping to the side.  I have tried teaching her to put her hands out in front of her, but when she does this she just gets interested in picking up a toy and then sitting up and leaning back on me.  I really don't think anything's wrong, I just think she's a bit lazy about it.  And I'm not willing to take the chance of just putting a pillow behind her, as she tips from side to side still.

It was about 7 months.  He had been army crawl/normal crawling for over 2 months and he just learned to go from a crawl to a sit position.  That's when it finally clicked and he could sit for several minutes at a time.  I just think he was too busy to be bothered to sit!

Daniel sat early at 4 months. I used to put a cushion behind him for if he fell backwards or sideways. Also I had a 'zoo pillow' which was my breastfeeding pillow so was quite supportive on his back as it came up high around him. This held him close and comfortably when I wasn't able to hold him.

cwolff,
could your dd sit on the bed with you watching closely? that way she has a soft place to fall but can learn that reaching without hands down means falling.  keep puttin toys just close enough that she can touch but not quite grab...
my ds got better at weightshifting after we took him on a trampolinee!

Both my son and oldest daughter sat with support from about 5 mths but neither could really sit unaided till they were crawling (7 1/2 mths and nearly 6 mths respectively). My youngest daughter started sitting unsupported literally overnight at about 6 1/2 months but shes still not crawling. I think all babies are different, noticed first two were interested in moving rather than staying still but my baby girl just likes to sit and watch, didn't even roll till 5 mths. Plus with her I was a bit more laidback, didn't push her and just waited till she was ready. Found a tri pillow good, enough support at back and padding at sides.
