Using utensils
« on: January 02, 2006, 14:38:35 pm »
My 20 month old will use a fork for about 5 minutes and hten becomes frustrated and will go back to her hands.  How do I get her to use a fork all the time?  Also she won't use a spoon at all.  No clue how to.  Any suggestions on how to get her to use her utensils???????  Do I just stop spoon feeding her and see what she does or is there any easier way to do this?

We gave our 18 month old a spoon for the first time at Christmas dinner, because we were having soup for the first course.  It was a relatively thick soup that stuck to the spoon so he was able to get some into his mouth.  We just let him experiment with it.  Sometimes he would get the spoon the right way and get lots of soup.  Other times it would be upside down and he'd ask us for help in orienting the spoon the right way.  Also, it helped that everyone else was eating the same thing. :)

I think just let her practice with something easy - we're going to try yogurt.  He's also learning to use a fork, but that's a bit easier with stuff like watermelon and big chunks of cooked veggies.  We give him a lot of encouragement and praise.  What sorts of things is your dd eating with a fork?  Is she frustrated because she can't get it onto the fork or it's just taking too long?

Just keep offering it and helping her when she needs it. If she gets frustrated and wants to go back to her fingers, that's okay...she'll figure it out before college! :D

If it makes you feel any better, Tyler just turned 2 and STILL prefers his fingers to utensils, and has very little patience for the whole thing!

I agree to just give her a utensil at every meal and let her experiment with it.  Dd is also just over 2 and will use a utensil for awhile, but then give in to the fingers.  Or even use the fingers to put the food onto the fork/spoon and help move it to her mouth and then push the food into her mouth so she doesn't drop it.  It's really just letting them practice as much as possible and see you demonstrating when you eat.  I wouldn't push it necessarily and I would only feed dc if they're not eating on their own, even if it's with their hands.  HTH

Sometimes Ewan still uses his hands :D , it would seem that way is faster if you are really hungry.  Just keep making the utensils available and help when needed.
