My milk supply is not increasing
« on: January 02, 2006, 17:38:22 pm »
Okay I maybe panicking but I can't get my milk supply to come back up! My lo is starting his 6 month growth spurt and it started about two days ago. My milk still hasn't caught up and we are nursing a lot! Does it take this long normally? He was only eating once at night and now it's like 2-4. So he is nursing adn then we are topping him of with formula because he is still hungry! Any advice is welcome.

Are you eating okay? I find that when I eat chicken my milk comes back with a vengence! My midwife did say that chicken is good for your milk supply.

How many times is he nursing during the day? How is that compared to what he was nursing?

Are you expecting your period? Are you drinking enough water?

what about expressing first thing in the morning after ds feeds and using that last thing during the day (or give dh a night feed to do?)  your supply should be most plentiful then... its when i express to have some for nursery (am trying to build up a stock)
good luck!

Hmm, it sometimes takes more than two days, I think anything between  two days and two weeks is OK.

I agree that chicken is good, but also being well hydrated is sooo important.

Okay...Aiden woke up. I had just fed him (both sides) and had fallen asleep nursing. I put him in his bed, write that last post and he wakes up screaming! He won't calm down and he is acting like he is hungry. I give him a bottle and he sucks atleast 4 oz down and is sleeping now (or playing in his bed  but content none he less) I am worried I am drying up. I don't have a pump, they are too expensive and I never needed it before.

We are nursing every 2-3 hours. I don't know what else to do. Poor guy is starving.

can you rent a pump? they do that here (the UK) from hospitals i think.
what about hand expressing? your hands get knackered but i did about 2 ounces for Ethan's cereal when we were visiting my folks in November.

i am a relative novice at all this. i am certain you will get some better advice soon.  in the meantime i just wanted to give you a big hug and tell you i know what its like to be worried about what your little one gets to eat.  good luck!

Keep up that nursing frequency during the day. Max had a big growth spurt at 6 months too. We were living in a hotel at the time, and he woke to eat several times at night. Once we were settled in the new house, I started solids and he was really ready at that point.

It is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just hang in there and see you on the other side of your growth spurt!

i had a decrease in milk supply around the same time, i spoke to my  son's pediatrician, went a medication called motillium, and i was able to breast feed til my son was 10mos old. it worked fantastic till that point, then the supply dried up and nothing helped.

Thanks everyone. It has gotten a lot better. He still drains both and has some bottle before bed but I guess he is just really hungry. Thanks for you help. This forum is awesome!
