Is breastmilk after solids necessary?
« on: January 02, 2006, 23:30:33 pm »
My dd recently started solids (she is almost 5 1/2 months old).  The pattern that works for us is to offer solids about 1-2 hours following breastmilk (breakfast 8, lunch 12, and dinner 4 -- all approximately and sometimes 1 or 2 of those 'meals' is just a couple of spoonfuls, just wanted the pattern established).

The 1st BW book recommended finishing solids off with a 10 min breastfeed which we don't usually do.  Here's why:  DD won't take breastmilk from a bottle anymore. she did at a very young age and then we just let the practice slip and now (no surprise) she is resistent to it.  I know if I really wanted I could go through the couple of days of resistance until she takes it, but honestly, I'm not really up for that.  And since we're just nicely only needing moms boob every 4 hours I'm reallly hesitant to get her used to having that again every 2 hours.  Also, by the time she's done solids, it's close to naptime and if I let her suckle she starts falling asleep at the breast and doesn't really take much anyways.

Here's my question/s: Is liquid following solids all that crucial?  And if so, I'd like to jsut use a sippy cup, AND THEN, is it necessary that it be breastmilk or formula (which I have never offered) or is a couple of sips of water ok?

I appreciate any responses.

I never did breastmilk or formula after solids, just water in a sippy cup. If it seems like she's still nursing enough, I wouldn't worry about it.
