DD not eating as much
« on: January 03, 2006, 03:19:10 am »
I guess I'm not too concerned about this, but looking for some reassurance or maybe just an explanation.  At 8WO, DDs consumption jumped from 3.5 ounces per feed to 4.5+.  She did this for almost 2 weeks and I actually purchased bigger bottles because I thought the change was imminent.  But, all that has changed now and she's back to 3.75 ounces consistently.  A 4 ounce feed is now a big one for her.

She did have shots last week and that honked up everything for about a day - small, erratic feeds.  And, our schedule has been a bit crazy with the holidays and all but I still try to feed her every 3 hours.  So, I have rationalize that her stomach shrunk when she got her shots and it'll take some time to "grow" again.  But, that just doesn't feel right.

The other thing is that she just doesn't seem hungry after 3 hours.  If she's dropped her intake (each feed is up to 2 ounces less and daily total is down 5-8 ounces), shouldn't she be starving at her next feed time.

She's a healthy baby at 13 pounds.  But based on the guidelines she should be taking in 26-39 ounces.  Her daily total is more like 20-23 ounces now.  This has all happened since her doc appt.  He was happy cuz she gained weight but that was compared to her 2 week checkup.  She won't see the doc for another 2 months - do I wait to see if her weight has stalled?  Am I being overly concerned?  What would you do?

I was having the same problem because DS wasn't hungry after 3 hour routine, so this is my second day of trying a 4-hour routine. So far so good, he has been a lot hungrier with the 4 hour routine, and also i tried a level 3 nipple, but i think its too much for him though. So the only thing a can tell you is that i'm switching back to level 2, but i'm sticking with the 4 hour routine, and hope for the best :D

I am also having the same problem right now. My Lo is 10 weeks tomorrow.  She was taking 4 oz. every 2 1/2-3 hours. Then she decided she wanted six oz.at each feed for about a day and half. Now, she is taking 4-5 oz. (4 oz. most of the time) every 4-5 hours.  :o I was trying to follow a 4 hour easy and feed her every four. But, if she is not hungry, then she spits up most of the bottle. Plus, I can't figure out a  4 hour easy for her age.  :( So, needless to say, our Easy routine is gone for now.

We are going to her doctor tomorrow for her 2 month checkup. I plan to ask him what is best and how much she should eat.

I remember the amount my first child ate went in cycles. Meaning he would eat a lot a few days and then not so much the next. Getting shots did cause him to loose his appetite for a couple of days. But, he always caught himself back up.  :)

If it doesn't change in a few days and you are still worried, you could always call your babie's doctor for reassurance.

My DS is 15WO (born 3lb 14oz now weighs 10lb 9oz) and is on the four hourly routine, he only has 4 bottles a day and has between 4-6oz per bottle (average over day 19-21oz), its takes about an hour to feed him this, i have tried different sized holed teats and at the mo we are using Avent size 3. i have also asked the question on food amount on this site and have been advised to try different bottles which we are going to try. The health visitor keeps telling us he putting on weight so shes quiet happy. hope this helps!!!!
