Prefers fruit to savoury!
« on: January 03, 2006, 17:17:39 pm »
Hi

My daughter is 8 months and has been eating solids for 3 months now.  She was doing really well eating all foods - savoury (veg and meat) and a bit of fruit for breakfast - then she fell ill for most of December.  She had bronchiolitis which she has just recovered from and during her illness she would hardly eat and what she would eat was just fruit.

The problem is that now she has recovered she only has 4-5 mouthfuls of savoury before clamming her mouth shut and will only open it for fruit after that!  I have tried mixing the fruit and savoury which works for a while or alternating the spoonfuls - is that the way to get her back to liking savoury again?

Before she was ill she was eating 4 cubes of meat/veg and some fruit - this has now been reduced to around 2 cubes of meat/veg and 2 cubes of fruit - is this enough for an 8 month old?

Hope somebody can help!

Thanks,

Karen

I wouldn't worry too much...keep in mind that your DD's main source of nutrition should still be formula and/or breastmilk for several more months. As long as she's still taking the proper amounts of these, she's getting the nutrition she needs, and solids are just a supplement to those.

That said, it's normal for preferences to vary quite a bit, and the best thing you can do is try to ride it out. Sometimes alternating spoonfuls works, and you can also try mixing, like you said. Tyler still likes some of the most vile (to me!) combinations of foods. His favorite for a loooong time was baby oatmeal mixed with fruit juice and mixed veggie puree.  Your DD could also be getting ready for all-out spoon refusal in favor of finger foods...when that happens, babies often start out by rejecting savories. You could try introducing well-cooked veggie chunks as finger food (she'll probably need you to put them into her mouth until she gets the hang of it). I'm afraid I can't give you much advice on the meat front, hopefully someone else can! HTH!

Hi kw,
My daughter is 14 months & is exactly the same! Since a chest infection last month will NOT eat her dinner (always loved it). It's not to do with consistency etc as she'll eat any amount of mashed up fruit!

I make all her meals but am going to try some savoury jars & see if they tickle her fancy!! But in the meantime she's getting loads of nutrition from the fruit - so not to worry. I just don't want a fussy eater.

Hopefully it'll be a short phase!!
