when to go from puree to mashed
« on: January 03, 2006, 21:41:28 pm »
Hi, can anyone help me my eldest is now 5 and I can't remember when the different transitions in weening happened.

My ds (24 weeks) has been Pureed fruit and veg for a couple of weeks now and his enjoying it, I am sure with my first we changed from puree to mashed at around 26 weeks, however this was before the new guideline of weeing at 6 months and she was weened at 4 months.

Should I start to introduce mashed food yet or is he too young??  It was so easy with my first and now I'm so confused.  When I've talked to my HV about it she seems reluctent to offer advice as he is not six months yet but he's showing all the signs and is a big baby.  He was 9lb 6oz born and now weighs 23lb 6oz.

Can anyone help??

Many thanks sarah

I'm back,  I tried Ollie today with mashed and he gagged a bit and pulling the strangest face.  I stopped in the end cause I was worried he was going to choke.  Can anyone please tell me what age they introduced mashed I really want to get this right and my mind is still blank from last time

Thanks :?

I am sorry I havent a clue about this being a first time mom but instict would tell me that the time to go for mashed food is when your LO can cope with eating them safely and the only way they will get used to that is if they get experience - giving them less smooth purees with tiny lumps then a bit bigger etc..
As I say its only instinct telling me that and Id be interested in hearing more as will is 5 and ahalf months and does very wel with pureed food and Id like to give him more lumpy food soon.

24 wks seems a bit young. I haven't heard of any guidelines for when to start mashed vs puree. Your best bet is like ennypen said, gradually start making purees a bit thicker and lumpier, using your DS's comfort level as a guide. Mashed foods require some "gumming" and most babies don't start to develop this skill until a bit later.

i just waited until andrew seemed to take the puree easily.  then i slowly added mashed foods.  if it seemed to much for him i would thin it out with a little bit of formula.
