bad gas
« on: January 04, 2006, 00:58:09 am »
my baby is about 10 days old, and he had the worst gas these last few days, so much that he cant poop more than 1ce or twice in the day- and thats after butrping him for an hour or so. I might add that this started happening right as soon as he came down with a cold. is this normal? I can post his schedual if needed, although the schedual has been thrown off some by the cold and the burping for extended periods.

Breastfed babies sometimes don't poop more than a couple times a day, so I wouldn't necessarily worry about that.  And the cold can throw off EVERYTHING (poor little guy!).

How is the latch, BTW?  If he's not latching quite well enough, he could be swallowing too much air, which can give him more gas.  Any chance you could get it checked, just to make sure? Is he gaining weight well and having lots of wet diapers (even if not poopy ones)?  Finally, have you tried doing a lot of bicycles with his legs to get the gas out?  I found that and tummy massage helped.

It is very unusual for a 10 day old breastfed baby to get a cold. Have you seen your doctor? A cold in a newborn can be very serious if he does have one.

And newborn babies cry. They wake up because they are uncomfortable, wet, cold/hot, didn't get burped well, or because they are hungry. There is a lot of learning on both your parts, to get to know each other. Textbook babies are rare! So be gentle on yourself, and give yourself some time.

And get to the doctor if it is really a cold! Fever? Coughing?
