45 minute naps for 10 week old?!!
« on: January 04, 2006, 09:56:26 am »
Warning this will be long!!

This is my first post and I have to apologise because up until this week I have been reading about 45 minute naps and thinking "Well at least that will not happen to me!" I take it all back!

My DD has been a great napper going from 2.5 to 3 hours until the past 4 or 5 days. Now 45 minutes max!!!

I have read about extending the 45 minute nap and have read the sleep interview, so today I decided to try some of the tactics. I put her down at exactly 8:00 am and she fell asleep by herself by 8:13. I went back in at 8:45 ready for the jolt. At EXACTLY 40 minutes the first jolt came and I was ready and I had my hand on her chest. It seemed to work and though I was prepared to stay at least 40 minutes I thought it was working quite well. Then she opened her eyes WIDE OPEN and smiled at me!!!

I thought by sneaking in I was catching her before she was fully awake? So I spent 45 minutes shielding her eyes with a hand on her chest and shushing her while periodically trying a dummy!! Right now she is upstairs dozing and whimpering and I am not sure what I have done wrong!

I am willing to commit as many days as I need to crack this, but would love some advice (preferably before the next nap this afternoon!)

Thank you for even reading this far!!!

45 minute naps for 10 week old?!!

Hi

As you probably know there is tons on here about 45 minute naps. My lo went down to 45 minute naps at around 10 weeks too, she's 4.5months now and has just started taking longer naps.

I tried waketosleep and other methods of extending naps, never worked.  With hindsight - and from reading everything I could get my hands on - I realise that these naps were perfectly normal and developmental for my dd.  What I mean is up to 10 weeks she was tired out from being born basically!  Then at 10 weeks she seemed to realise she was here and alive and became more alert, however she couldn't actually do much to tire herself out and so could only sleep for one sleep cycle.........Very trying indeed especially as it became harder to settle her as the day wore on and she was often hysterical come bed time.

However as soon as she found her voice and started babbling she started to extend her naps, then when this didn't wear her out she went back to 45 minute.........then when she started rolling over she started extending her naps then when this bored her she went back to 45 minutes!!!!  Now she is working on sitting up, pulling herself up with all her might - and guess what?  She's taking longer naps again!!

I've learnt to ride it out and if it gets too much when she's 45min napping we go for a care or buggy ride.

Another thought.........Mia has never had a long morning nap.  I'm not convinced that after 12 hours solid sleep she need a 2 hour nap after being up for 2 hours so she just has a 30-45 minute catnap.  Then she takes a longer nap at lunchtime as she's really ready for it (it's based on gina fords routines and seems to fit in better with her natural biorhythm)
then another wee catnap around 5pm as she's doing now.  Doing it that way also reduces the anxiety everynap time - I now just worry about the lunchtime one!!

45 minute naps for 10 week old?!!

My 10 week old has always been a good napper during the day and a poor sleeper at night. We went for shots yesterday and today all she will take is 45 minute naps. I don't know if it is because of the shots yestersay or if she is just starting to take 45 minute naps. She is not cranky at all (playing happily in her bouncy now  :) ). So, I am going to see how it goes for a few days. If she starts sleeping well at night, then the 45 minute naps can stay at our house.  My son was always a 45 minutes napper until he was 6 months. He starting sleeping through the night at about 2 months. So, we never tried to extend his naps. He is an excellent sleeper now. If your LO is not overily cranky, I would also suggest to just ride it out.
