Is It 2 to 1 Time?
« on: January 05, 2006, 23:41:36 pm »
I hope not, but I have a feeling it could be.   :?

For the last week, Nathan is taking longer and longer to fall asleep, even though he seems sleepy when I put him down.  A majority of the time now, it takes him an hour to get to sleep.  During that hour, he sings, talks, dances, and who know what else.      (Right now I hear him chucking his pacifiers out of the crib and screaming "Uh,oh".)

The thing is that when he finally gets to sleep, he sleeps for his normal 1.5 hours.

Is it time for the change?

Hi Shelia!  Hope you both are well :-)

I have just added a new announcement w/ a great thread on the 2 to 1 transition.

Can you post your schedule and that will help see if the answer is yes or no?

Hi Michelle -
I just read your announcement - great info!  I feel much more prepared...

Our routine is:
6:30ish - wake and play in crib
7 - breakfast
9 - bottle
9:30 - nap (usually 1.5 hrs)
11:30 - lunch
2 - snack
2:30 - nap (usually 1.5 hrs, but it takes him about an hr to fall asleep, and yesterday he played in crib for 2 hrs, never slept!)
5 - dinner
7:30 - bottle and bed

Do you think I should transition him?  A couple days ago, I tried and he slept from about 11:30 - 12:45 (less than one of his normal naps - hmmmm).

This morning I tried again, and he stayed awake until 12 (after lunch), but was EXHAUSTED.  He cried for about 20 minutes before falling asleep, which he never does, so I know he is overtired.  He is sleeping now, so hopefully I will wake to sleep around 1 and see if that helps.

Anything else I should do?

Thanks so much!
Sheila

Hi Shelia

Sorry for the delay, i was out of town for a few days.

How are things going?

If you wanted to stay on the 2 naps, the only thing that stood out when looking at your routine was that you could try cutting the am to 1hr max and see if that helps him settle better for the pm nap.

I'll check back  :D

Thanks so much, Michelle.   :D   I actually just did that starting a couple days ago after you suggested it in the 2 to 1 thread.  I have started waking him after 1 hr 15 min, and he is SO unhappy to be woken.  But instead of refusing the pm nap, he now takes it, but it is still usually 3:30 by the time he falls asleep.

After re-reading the other thread, I just don't think he is ready yet since his am nap is still his most important nap (usually falls asleep right away).  But hopefully by making it shorter, he will fall into a good routine again.

Thanks!!!

How is Megan doing with the asthma/reflux?  I've been thinking about you guys and hope she is doing well.

Glad it helped :-)  Let me know if you need any more help.

She is doing better w/ the reflux but not the allergies...or ear infections.  It is so hard to tell which is the allergies vs the cold.  But she has been sick or stuffed up for weeks on end which of course lead to the ear infections.  We are going to see an ENT ...then depending see the GI specialist.

Thanks for asking.

Michelle or anyone else,
Can I ask you a couple questions just to make sure I am on track?

Nathan was back on two naps and doing well for a while, and for the past week or so, he has started to refuse either one nap or the other.  I have been laying him down around 9:30, and if he just plays, I will pick him up after about 20 minutes or so.  I then try to get him to hold out until 11:30 or 12.  The problem is that his nap is so distrupted.  He will sleep for about 30 minutes, wake screaming, and it takes about 20 more minutes to get him to resettle.  Then he might sleep another 45 minutes.  He is exhausted the rest of the day.

This tells me that he is over-tired, right?  Arggg - I hate being in between 2 and 1!   :-\

So today, I decided to go by the book, and I bumped his morning nap up a bit, ad he went to sleep at 10:30.  But by bumping up the am nap, isn't it less likely that he will take a pm nap?

I hope I haven't rambled too much...  Thanks for any help!

If you are asking does this decrease the likely hood he will take a pm nap, that is anyone's guess  :P.  All you can do is try it this way and if he doesn't take the pm nap - go for an earlier bed time.

It sounds like you are doing everything right.

Let know how it goes.

Thanks, Michelle.  Well today was a 45 min am nap (after a woke him), and NO pm nap.  So tonight will be an EARLY bedtime, and tomorrow I will try for only one nap around noonish.

Wish me luck!  :D
