Transition from bottle to sippy cup?
« on: January 06, 2006, 01:40:20 am »
Our dd (almost 10 mos old) drinks formula from her bottle well.  She also drinks water from her sippy cup equally well.  However, as we're attempting to start transitioning her from a bottle to a sippy cup, she barely drinks anything from a sippy cup filled with formula.  But, as soon as I transfer the formula to a bottle, she guzzles it down ... so, I know she's still hungry.  Has anyone else has this experience?  Did you just keep trying?  Or, did you wait until you transitioned to whole milk?  Thanks!
Jen

Transition from bottle to sippy cup?

I just kept trying.  I knew that Jackson could drink out of his sippy cup but he would get fedup that it wasn't his bottle after sucking only a couple of times with the sippy cup.  So one morning I decided that there was no more bottles.  He protested a bit at the first feed of the day but then relented because he was hungry.  After that he had no problems with using his sippy cup at all and he is much better at using it now too.

Tyler drank water out of a sippy cup, but I didn't worry about giving him formula out of it. I tried a few times, but he just sipped out of it. When we transitioned him to whole milk when he turned 1, we started cutting out bottles and giving him milk in the sippy. It took him a couple of weeks to get used to it, and to this day he's still a "sipper." It's like he understands that cups are for drinking, not nourishment. I had to offer him the sippy often so that he'd drink all of his milk. You can keep trying if you want, but there's no rush.

Transition from bottle to sippy cup?

We agonized over this as DD went on a hunger (drinking) strike when we tried replacing the nipple with the sippy top on her Avent bottles.  We were saved by a series of posts I found on Babycenter.com that recommended starting out on a sippy cup without a valve.  The babies don't want to suck as hard on the sippy nipples since their regular nipples are softer and flow more freely.  There are two non-valve sippy cups that we tried:  Nuby No-Spill Sippy Gripper Cup 10 oz. by Luv N' Care and The First Years Take & Toss 10 oz. Spill-Proof Cups  (see links below).  For folks in the states, we found them at Target.

We have been using the Nuby bottles exclusively for the past month or so.  Granted they are not 100% leak-proof, but DD is one step closer to a traditional sippy cup.

Good luck!

Transition from bottle to sippy cup?

I am still struggling with my just turned one year old son, Benjamin.  He refuses to drink from a Tommy Tippee cup but will drink water from the Be Free traning cup, which has a much softer teat. I think part of his problem was the timing of the introduction of the Tommy Tippee cup, as with hindsight, I now realise that at the same time he was beginning to sprout teeth

To get round this without losing sight of drinking from the Tommy Tippee, I still offer him that cup between meals - like when we are out and about -and he is beginning to do more than just chew it

I was advised by my health visitor that a Diody cup would be a good idea as he loves to sip from my water glass.  Does anyone know where I can get hold of one of these?

He drinks 2 bottles of milk a day now (luckily, he has been a great eater) and I am relucant to transfer milk to one of the training cups until I am sure that he will drink...or should I just be brave and give it a go?!

well my dd is now refusing the bottle altogether accept sometimes at her bedtime bottle and she is refusing formula.  Wants nothing to do with it so my pediatrician gave permission to start whole milk with some formula mixed in to get it in her.  she will drink water and diluted juice from her Nuby but not milk, plus she is not sure about the milk to begin with. But i have found that the Nuby cup works best and I ordered a tommytippee cup to try out.

We're making a little progress.  She drank about 3-4 ounces of formula out of her sippy cup today versus the 1-2 ounces any other time previous.  I bought the recommended First Years brand of sippy cups and we'll see if that helps at all.  Other moms I've talked to too this week have said it's a practice thing and it eventually gets better, even if you have to wait until formula is phased out to whole milk instead.  Thanks for all the advice so far!
