When to move to your own room?
« on: January 06, 2006, 16:20:09 pm »
My LO is 12 weeks and currently sleeps in a moses basket by my bed. I am beginning to think about moving him into his own room for night sleeps and was wondering when would be the best time to do this. I was hoping to wait until he sleeps through the night (mainly for my benefit as his nursery is down the stairs and along the hall and it's much easier to settle and feed when he's by me!) but I think if I wait he may be school age before he sleeps in his own room!

He only wakes a few time in the night usually - once at 1:30 and settles back down pretty easily and once around 4:30 for a feed, but he sometimes he's up and down after that needing his dummy putting back in. He has taken naps in his own room, bith in his basket in the cot and just in the cot itself, and although he doesn't do this regularly it doesn't cause a problem when he does sleep in there.

Am I being too selfish by keeping him by me? I've read on these forums that some people's lo's slept better once they were in their own room (although I know he's sleeping pretty well now for his age) and it would be nice to get our bedroom back! Any advice on this would be great.

Hi Lewis's Mum

I wanted to keep Zander in with us until 6 months because of the advice for preventing SIDS but we moved him into his own room yesterday.  I felt really sad about it  but he'd started stirring at 4am and waking once he realised we were there instead of re-settling.  I was moving out of the bedroom into the spare room in the early hours so he didn't wake!  He woke at midnight last night which is unheard of but he settled again easily once he realised I still came to him if he asked.

It's entirely your decision when to move him, it just seemed the right thing to do with Zander's early wakings.  BTW he's almost 18 weeks old.  It was nice to be able to get ready for bed with the lights on and without tip-toeing.  I hope DH doesn't think bedroom acrobatics will be back on as I'm too knackered!!

My LO was moved into her own room at 8 weeks. She acutally settle easier after that, because she gets the chance to settle herself now instead of me rushing to her.

Do what feels right for you, but at 12 weeks your LO should be fine in there own room and you may even find that they will settle better when given the chance. sometimes just knowing your there makes it harder for them to settle.

We moved Tiya to her room on xmas eve and believe me it's so much better.  She turned 3 months on 1 December.  She used to sleep in our bed until we moved her.  She would not sleep in her crib.  I had to be hard and say it's time to get into that crib and we achieved it. I've had to sleep with her once since then.  She sleeps from 11pm-7am and the first few nights I could not sleep because I was worried about her.  Her progress has been amazing.  I've only started her on EASY this year, still working on getting her to have naps longer than 45 mins!  BTW to put your mind at ease, get a good baby monitor.
