Hi,
With our first we used the monitor and like you said I heard every sound. His room was right beside ours, so we stopped using it after about a month. With our second one, her room is all the way down the hall. We are using it now, but turned down low, so all we hear is when she is actually crying. We'll probably stop in about a month or so. Whenever she is sleeping more consistently at night. Even without the monitor if they need you, they will let you know.  :D

Hi!  When our DS was about that age, we did use a monitor just because I am paranoid.   :?   At around 9 mos, I stopped using a monitor at night, and we both seemed to sleep SO much better.

Maybe you can start using a monitor, but with a lowered volume, and then you can get rid of it when you are comfortable?  Good luck!

If you can afford it, how about getting a portable video monitor with night vision (the brand we use is Summer and I think it was about $160)?  We got one about a month ago and it is absolutely fantastic!  We can check on her without disturbing her or getting up.  At night, we usually turn it off & keep her door closed but we can hear her if she's really crying.  I think you automatically become a lighter sleeper when you have a child so you wake up if she's really upset.

We used to just leave both doors open, but since a fire safety officer friend of mine told me that she'd seen so many babies die (!) in fires from parents leaving their doors open, I've started closing it and using the monitor. Apparently a closed door can give an extra 20mins to a baby in a fire. Also I prefer it because then DS is less likely to hear us moving around in the middle of the night and wake up!

We don't use a monitor, it picks up EVERYTHING!!! But our baby girl is right next door to us so I can hear her at least before she starts to cry, when she is waking and lets out her whines.
