duvet or sleeping bag in big boy bed
« on: January 09, 2006, 09:20:19 am »
Matthew is 25months and whilst he is happy and contained in his cot and has shown no interest in trying to get out since he can't in a grobag/sleeping bag I feel that I need to sort out sleeping in a big bed before doing potty training (good idea??)

So, currently
He sleeps in a grobag
Still moves around his cot during the night from one end to another, even though he has a pillow.

Should I:
*Take off the side and keep him in the grobag, but my reservation is that he can't get back in bed if he fell out, on the other hand it could prevent him trying to get out because it's more difficult in a sleeping bag

or

get him used to the duvet with the sides on, then take the sides off the cotbed and cope with possible getting in/out/in/out of bed.  We have a gate across his door already.

Would you recommend getting a side to the bed since he moves around quite a lot still.

Any thoughts / advice / what did you do??

Thanks
alex

Hi Alex,

I don't have any advice for you as the transition to a big bed still has yet to happen here.  But I will be watching for some words of wisdom from the others!

We moved Harry to a big bed while it was still summer, so he ended up with just a couple of light blankets on his bed.  However, he kicked them off quite a lot,and I would end up going into him and covering him up.
He's had a 4 tog quilt for a couple of months now and sleeps a lot better with it - I think cos it's heavier, and he is also able to pull it up now.

not really the answer you were looking for, was it?

Hi Alex

When we were getting Jess ready for a bit bed,we took the sides off the cot for about 5 weeks.Although she wriggled like mad before hand, when the sides were off she stayed put.We didn't have any bedguard up,just a few duvets and pillows on the floor.
As for the covers,we always had a cot duvet anyway, then went to the normal sized duvet for her big bed.
I've never used grobags or sleeping bags,so can't help you there, sorry

Here's what we did with Nathan at 20mths.  He had had a pillow for a while which seemed to help him sleep in one spot in the cot anyway.  Then he has always slept in a polar fleece sleep suit with legs (just like extra thick jammies with feet).  When he went into the bb I put a rail up on the side, got him a duvet, but still kept him dressed in the sleep suit.  With the idea that he wasnt' really capable of pulling it up all the time, but at least it was there and the sleep suit kept him warm and meant when he got up in the morning, he could wander around the house still warm before getting dressed.  I'm thinking I will get another size up in sleep suits for this winter when he will be 3 and that will be the last size I buy and hopefully after that he's capable of pulling the covers up properly.

First, I think it's fine to keep your lo in a crib while potty training. I potty trained my now 4-yr-old while he was in the crib (he was 2 1/2).

If you really want to go to the big bed, I agree with the fleece sleep suit to replace the sleeping bag, with rails on the sides of the bed. That way he won't fall out and he'll be warm enough. I hate to say it, but both my kids STILL move around in their beds! And they definitely get cold if they don't wear enough.

We got Bryony a duvet for Christmas around the time that we were thinking of taking the sides of the cot bed, and enthused about it, and how mummy and daddy had a duvet.  Sometimes Bryony would ask for her duvet and sometimes a 'bag (still sleeping in the cotbed).  She would often start with a duvet but call out after a few minutes for a sleeping bag, but gradually she got used to the idea.  The great thing with the cotbed was that there was nowhere for the duvet to go!

When we took the sides off the cot (which I did on the spur of the moment after she threatened to climb out at naptime  ), we put a bedguard on and pretty much insisted on the duvet from that point on.  The bedguard kept the duvet in place fine.  It was in facts several mnths before Bryony actually got out of her bed by herself - it simply didn't seem to occur to her, or at least not at night once we'd left her in her room.

Since then we've done away with the bedguard, but since we had a few disturbed nights because the duvet fell off, we bought a 'duvet gripper' online from GLTC.  i'm sure you could devise something similar as it's v. simple but it does the trick.  It's actually designed for a single rather than cotbed, so it's a bit loose but it still stops the duvet falling off.  Bryony also fell out of bed a few times, but the cotbed's so low anyway, and we'd frequently go up after a thud to find she'd crawled back in and was fast asleep again!

We moved dd into her big bed a few months ago and kept her in her sleeping bag for two nights.  On both those nights she got herself out of bed but couldn't get back in.  WE found her trying to sleep standing up with her head resting on the bed   :(  :D   After that we just took her out of the sleeping bag and dressed her warmly and she did great.  WE just put a guard up one end of her bed and even though she moves around a lot she has only fallen out once and that was onto pillows so she just climbed back in!!
