Will 8 mo dd EVER lay down to sleep on her own?
« on: January 10, 2006, 15:34:48 pm »
Cate is almost 8 months old. And I am VERY consistent about naps and night sleep routines when going to bed and waking up. I still feed her one a night at about 2 - 3am (plan on cutting that out at 9 mo.)

She goes sown at 7 pm and is on a 4 hour EASY waking about 7 each day.

We usually have 2- 3 night wakings (but it used to be 6-7, so that's getting better) BUT

She stands up and I use Tracy's plan to get her down and leave, then turn around and come back until she stays down.

But we've been doing it for 2 weeks consistently and I am wondering will she EVER lay down alone?

Last night she was up at 2 (I fed her) then not back asleep until 4! I would keep turning around, and eventually walking out for up to a minute.

I am finding that her cry is more of a mad yell, so I am TEMPTED to leave her until she falls asleep alone (especially when she smiles when I come back in the room).

But I am not sure what to do. Any opinions?

Thanks!

she will do it eventually, though you may well be close to insanity by the time she does!   :D

i don't understand the last part of this.... you leave the room, and then go back in?  is she crying and that's why you return??

is she crying when she's standing?  or only crying when you leave???

just not entirely clear on what's going on...  :?

Sorry -to clarify, she wakes at night, then stands up and cries for me. I'll go in with no lights or anything and help her down, then I turn to leave, she gets back up and cries, I go back and help her down, then turn to leave, she stands, cries, and so on. I do this until she stays down (which usually means she is almost asleep).

I hate to stay in there when I put her down because she struggles to get up, and I don't want to fight her (or make it a game - although the pd might be at this point).

Also we do this at some (not all nap times). When I really time her naps right, she goes right down, ND at bedtime she usually goes right to sleep, although now that I am being really strict about fully waking her between last bf and putting her in her crib sometimes we go through the entire process then.

And like I mentioned, when I leave, her cries seem more like a mad yell than a cry "Get back in here!!!", NOT "I need  you!!!" IYKWIM

it sounds like you're doing everything right, and you just have to ride her out.  i agree with the walking out - sounds like that's what she needs to have happen.  but boy, it's exhausting, isn't it?  :?

ps - love your new avatar, but i kinda miss your old one.  i grew up in st. pete, and it reminded me of home!

I guess I am wondering should go right back in or wait a little longer? OR will she learn to stop doing this with the approach I am taking..

St. Pete is really great...dh and have been here 4 years almost. Where did you live here?

well, if she's doing more of a mad cry instead of an "i need you" cry, you might want to try waiting for just a couple moments to see if she will settle on her own first, but keep in mind you probably will end up back in there anyhow.  might help.

i used to live on the northeast side - in shore acres.

Hi Beata - we had the same problem over here.  DS had been standing up in his crib and crying for what seemed like an eternity (approx. 1.5 months).  I would only go in when I heard the frantic cry - not the mad cry.  If I went in too early he thought it was a game, and as fast as I could lay him down he'd roll right over and be standing up again.  AND with this huge grin.  Quite frustrating . . .

During her activity time you could try to show Cate how to get 'down'.  It took us quite a long time to master that skill, but DS now does it.  Like Jamie said, you will have to ride this one out.  Good luck, hopefully she'll master the 'get down' faster than my DS did.
Cheers,
