Rice or Soy??
« on: January 12, 2006, 17:04:40 pm »
We found out that my baby had allergies (milk & egg) about 4 months ago through bloodwork.  Other than the bloodwork we had no idea.  He never showed any signs of allergies and neither Dh or I have any allergies.  The allergy specialist told me that as long as I was bf'ing that I could not eat any dairy or eggs myself.  I had been all along and ended up still doing it.  My own ped had told me not to stop as Carter had never had any reaction (no gas or tummy aches, hives, or ANYTHING ever!!).

Anyway, fast forward to 2 days ago!  I went to see my ped because I am having a hard time finding daycare for my DS due to his allergies.  Also I need to wean him off bf during the day as I am going back to work and Carter wouldn't take the formula that the ped recommended.  He told me that because Carter is an older baby that I could go right to either rice milk or soy milk rather than struggling with a hypo formula.  However, I need advice on which one to try first!!!  I was thinking of trying the soy for the protein content.  DS has never even had rice cereal as he used to have pooping issues and we steered clear of any foods that cause constipation.

So, is one better than the other?  Does one taste better than the other? More nutritional?  Less hard on digestive system??

Please help!
TIA

Rice or Soy??

The only concern I would have with soy is that more babies tend to have allergy problems with it, especially if they are allergic to other things.  But if the bloodwork didn't show anything, then maybe that is ok.  Personally, I like the rice milk taste better, but maybe that is because that's what I'm used to since dd had problems with both dairy and soy for the first year or so.

good luck.

I personally like the rice milk better too. I know you can get enriched rice milk here that has the added calcium.

Rice or Soy??

Hi there, your docs musth ave a different perspective over there. I was told that baby's still need milk as a large nutritional source and that rice milk does not contain the necessary nutrients for a baby/toddler. Maybe that is just a UK thing.

Sara~

The rice milk I buy is enriched with everything (calcium, Vitamin D) so the only thing that is missing really is the protein, and some fat, although there is some in it.  The protein was a concern of mine, but since dd eats eggs, beans, and some chicken and fish, I figured she was ok.

We now give her a mix of rice milk and regular cows milk, not because of her allergy, but her poops are horrendous if she has too much dairy and she already eats a ton of cheese and yogurt, so I think she's covered.  In fact I've started wondering if she is getting too much dairy now. :)

Rice milk is much better than soy for both babies and adults.  Soy has some enzyme inhibitors which make it very difficult for the human body to absorb the nutrients.  Additionally, the rice is much less likely to cause any allergy problems.  You can also try almond milk after your lo hits one year.  test this out slowly to make sure there are no nut allergies.
