3 weeks-still low supply of milk
« on: January 13, 2006, 17:16:22 pm »
I had c-section after a long day of induced labor and it's been 17 days now and I am still very low on milk supply. I've tried to pump to see what does come out but only 2oz at the best from both breast. I am supplementing with formula because baby is always hungry after b/f and always cries.  He sleeps well after he eats formula but I would like to get b/f another try, he latches well and tries hard to get anythign out. Does anybody knows how much longer should I try to push b/f? I understand it's demand/supply issue and we are trying very hard - but after 17 days should we still keep going? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm no pro so you may want to wait for one of the experts though here's my two cents-
I too had a C-section and I believe a low supply (never did have a heavy letdown, not even drips) so my doctor told me to give formula. I was hesitant due to the supply/demand thing but I did the odd evening. I continued BF and let her suck on demand for the first 4 weeks and she did gain weight so I eliminated the formula. I tried pumping and practically nothing came out yet my lo is able to suck it out. I would suggest you continue but for now- feed on demand to really get your suppy going, also check with a BF clinic (or your hospital) to make sure your lo has a good latch and get her weight checked weekly to make sure she's gaining.

Do you have access to a lactation consultant, either private or from the hospital you gave birth? Where are you located at?

2oz isn't bad for a 3 week old, especially if you've been supplementing with formula. YES! you should keep going if you want to. Do you have an electric hospital grade pump? Are you pumping after each feed?

thanks
i am going to see La Leche League this week and my dr as well.  LLL lady also thinks that baby is maybe not latched well although few  weeks ago two rn told me that he is doing  well, but things can change I guess. I just needed to hear that this could be still ok and we should keep trying.
thank u again.

If I had a dime for every person who had told me "but *insert name* told me the latch was ok" I'd be rich! Truth is not very many people know what a good latch is!

Best of luck with your lactation consultant. They are wonderful women!

When you give formula do you use a bottle or are you using a SNS (supplementary nutritional system)? It's a device where your breast gets stimulation while the baby also gets milk through a tube at your nipple. It is used by people who are relactating and feeding adopted children. This company sell it (I don't work for them!)

You should definitely talk to a professional. I just read about someone who gave up breastfeeding at 7 weeks and then restarted at 7 months so anything is possible. Every breastfeed is giving your baby some health benefits.
