Suddenly mouth shut tight against puree
« on: January 13, 2006, 18:31:28 pm »
My dd Ashleigh was doing well eating her solids, starting on banana at lunch and then moving banana to dinner and having apple at lunch.  She wasn't exactly excited about eating, but we could get her to open up enough and she always swallowed what was in her mouth.  After having a fever a few days ago and eating only breast milk, her mouth is clamped shut against anything with food on it (finger or spoon) before she even has any.  I battle to trick her into opening her mouth and putting something in, and she will still swallow it, but how do I get her to open her mouth willingly again? :?

Also because she isn't eating any solids, I'm not sure when is okay to give her breast milk without discouraging her from trying the solids.

Any Suggestions?

Its been over a week and my DD is still showing no signs of wanting to wat puree.  I tried giving her a farley's biscut and she loved it... right up until it got soggy!  She will chew on apple slices or carrot sticks, but doesn't want apple sauce of purree carrots.  I thought is might be teething, but there wasn't much drool.  I think she just wants to chew!

I am a bit worried because we are already a bit behind on moving to solids, and I know that she needs  more calories to help her sleep through the night (she still does a full bf around 4am).

how old is your lo?? any teeth as of yet??  i know dd went through a phase like this when she was teething..and the chewing is probably helping.  just keep trying and one day lo will start eating again.  in the meantime u may go through a nursing strike when lo starts taking solids again.  we had a couple days where dd didn't have much of anything solids or milk and i got worried of course, but after a couple days it all seemed to figure itself out!

Jennifer-

If it isn't teething like teezee said, it could be time to introduce finger foods if you haven't already. Tyler did the exact same thing at 9 mo and wouldn't eat a bite from the spoon until after he turned 1. Have you started any finger foods yet? Start with easily dissolved foods, like cheerios, and soft fruit/veggie chunks. It will take some time for her to learn how to pick them up and get them into her mouth, so she'll need your help for a little while. Keep some pieces on the tray for her to experiment with and feed her the bits from your fingers. She'll get the hang of it! As for the spoon, I'd offer it every so often and just put it away until next time when Tyler refused. He got over it in his own time.

Also, it may seem like she's eating a lot less this way, but keep in mind that purees are mostly water, whereas finger foods aren't. It will probably take much less to fill her up with finger foods. Keep us posted!

Funny how one day something doesn't work and the next day, with someone else it does!  I was visiting my parents over the weekend and my Dad was showing the LO he was eating while we were trying to get her some puree.  all of a sudden she opens her mouth and wants the spoon!  She ates more than I have ever seen her eat of pear at that sitting.  She has done relatively well since then, but I don't think she liked the peas much!  Hopefully now she will start sleeping better too!  Oh, and I o think she might be teething a bit as the drool has increased  and chewing anything is a priority.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

My 8 month old is doing this now...

* rejected nursing
* rejected spoon or sippy cup
* rejected food (solids)

I've started giving him the Step 3 (Beech Nut) foods and figured out (sort of) why he wasn't eating. He's teething. The chunky bits were hurting his gums to eat and he wasn't wanting to eat - didn't care to eat - but WOULD nurse if he was starving enough.

I've put him back on Step 2, which is softer - he's eating. And his routine of eating is back on track. Poor guy - his gums were hot, but I never thought about food hurting him....

I talked to my sister (she has a 9 month old) and her baby did the same thing.. and still does.

A stage... ?
