What to feed when?
« on: January 17, 2006, 09:22:09 am »
Hi.  I am weaning my six month old daughter onto solids at the moment and she is taking the food really well.  However I am very confused about when she should get her solids and also how much formula milk she should still be taking in a day.  At the moment she takes four feeds a day of approximately 7oz and solids twice, once at breakfast and once at the 4pm feed.  She will take 6 or 7 small spoonfulls of the solids each time.  She has been going to bed at 7.30pm and waking at around 4pm to take a full 7oz bottle of milk.  Should she be having a third helping of solids  and does this mean she will take less milk?  I feel so confused as all my other friends are all doing different things and don't want to let my wee one down.  Any help appreciated.

Hi there! It can be hard to find just the right balance of solids and formula. Keep in mind that formula should continue to be her main source of nutrition for several more months. She should get 26-32 oz of formula per day. Solids amounts really vary quite a bit, so your best bet is to keep an eye on her formula intake and go from there. If she's taking less formula or is losing interest in her bottles, cut back on the solids. Does that make sense?

As for introducing the 3rd solids meal, that doesn't necessarily mean she should start taking less formula unless she's eating more than 32 oz per day. It's really up to you and her when you start the 3rd meal. If solids have been going well and her body seems to have adjusted to it, then you can start the 3rd helping whenever you'd like. HTH!
