Mixing ricotta with veggies????
« on: January 17, 2006, 11:22:47 am »
hi... I read on a post by Luisas Mum that she mixes ricotta with the veggies she gives dd... can somebody please clarify????

do i blend the ricotta and the vegs. or mash them... Ricotta is very hard and it doesn't mash that easily?

also, won't administering cheese to a 6 months old be too soon??? won't it cause allergies???

A little mixed up here....
thanx

i did this from about 7 mo old for both girls to get in the dairy/calcium. ricotta is fine for lo and is a really healthy food to give. i woudl just add a big spoonful to either pureed veg and later to mashed foods - tastes great mixed with puree of zucchini and pumpkin. when you get to the bolognaise stage you can stir through ricotta in that too.

the ricotta we get here is quite moist and creamy and i just mixed it through. look for ones labeled "smooth" or "full fat", not the skim variety that many adults choose to keep their meals low fat (lo need the fat - lucky them)

BTW you can serve/use yogurt and cheeses from 6-7 mo depending where you reside and use milk in cooking /on cereals as well. it is just not recommended to give milk as a drink until 1yr (again - rec depends on where you live)

I also use Ricotta for james, but we bake it.  I have a recipe where you mix the ricotta with herbs, make it into little "cake" size pieces and then put it in the oven till cooked.  Then I have made a tomato sauce and put this over the top.  Very yummy

Ah, yes, sorry. Forgot the lo was only 5.5 months.

I gave very small amounts of ricotta (well, my Italian MIL did!) from 6 months but the chart I was trying to follow said wait until 9 months for cheese. She'd had no adverse reactions to it or anything else so I just let it go.

At 9 months when dd officially started on ricotta, I just used to mash the already pureed vegies or fruit into the ricotta with a fork. The ricotta we buy is fairly firm but not so hard that you can't mash it.

Sorry for causing the confusion.
