Will it impact milk supply?
« on: January 18, 2006, 00:31:27 am »
My lo is 9 weeks old and BF 8-9x in 24 hour period. I do not pump- never got into it, never bought a pump.  I have an outing coming up where I cannot bring her and I have to go in the afternoon for 5 hours so I plan on leaving a bottle with formula for dh to give to her. Will missing this one feed impact my milk supply for the evening or next day? Also, how quickly is milk "replenished" and how long does it take for supply to change with demand (I've recently added a dream feed)?

Thanks in advance for replies :)  I get better information here than from my doctor!

1 missed feeding won't affect your supply at all.  What it WILL do however, is make you quite uncomfortable at that time.  You may find yourself leaking.  Be prepared to go to the washroom or somewhere to manually express some milk to give you relief.

It won't impact your supply.  But, like someone else said, YOU will be uncomfortable.  I went to a conference once for the same amount of time.  I had no time to pump or express while I was there... I was in some pain!  My breasts were huge.  Good thing I had a suit on that hid my breasts pretty well.  I came home and pumped right away-- knowing of course, that I had another 3 hours to feed my lo.  So, make sure that when you pump that you leave enough time, approximately 3 hrs., to replenish your supply.  For me, 2 hours was too little time.

As for the dreamfeed question, it should just take a few days for your body to regulate the supply for that feed. The milk is there, your body will produce it as demanded.
