Does pumping do the same thing as breastfeeding?
« on: January 18, 2006, 01:35:41 am »
hi
i read somewhere that when you breast feed the babys mouth massages the milk ducts which sends a message to the brain telling it to make milk. i also read that although pumping empties the breast too, it does not massage the ducts the same way, so emptying is all that it is doing, and that "emptying" is not what sends the message to produce. is that true? i have read though that it isnt true.and if i do have to pump sometimes. how long can I go without feeding before my milk dries up. and also howcan I get the milk back?

Just wanted to direct you to an excellent website called http://www.kellymom.com.  They have a section about pumping.  I don't have much experience with pumping but a good friend of mine has pumped exclusivley for 6 months and has enough milk for her child and then some.  The site also offers very informative info about how breastfeeding works and how to mantain your supply or increase it if need be.

You've asked a lot of open ended questions that I really don't know how to answer.

Pumping is emptying the breast, yes you can pump for a missed feed. Some women exclusively pump, just pumping more often to get the ounces an efficient baby would have gotten in less frequent feeding.

"How long can I go without feeding before my milk dries up" Well it takes a couple months for milk to totally dry up, but supply can be affected by missing feeds.

You "get the milk back" by pumping more often or feeding more often. Supply = demand.

I know a woman who exclusively pumped for her first son, she did that until he was 18 months. Wow, it was a dedication! I think that women who generally have a good supply by nature may successfully pump for a long time and have supply. But, I guess, they need to pump frequently and kind of "on demand" if you kwim. They need to make up for growth spurts and pump then more often. Pumping may become very time consuming but it it is a goal, it can be done.

Generally, if you compare baby nursing action to the pumping action of a pump, baby is much better at it than a pump. Some women can nurse successfully a baby but can't pump more than an ounce of milk.

Some women still have some milk months after they weaned their children, even years. If you worry that a missed feed or two will lead to drying up your milk, well, they will decrease your supply but won't make you dry up completely. It is a much longer precess unless you start skipping feeds frequently and start weaning early in the game before your supply is fully established, before 6 weeks.

Hi all,

Question on this thread - why would you express and then exclusively bottle feed ebm? I understand if you are working, but every feed? Of course, there is always the possibility that bub is in hospital, but surely not for 18 months?!

Expressing to bottle feed seems like so much extra effort. Just curious.

Nicola, sometimes baby to breast isn't an option. Baby may refuse breast. Mom may have latching issues, or baby may have oral disfigurations that make nursing difficult. Some moms just really like feeding with bottles.

I always am thankful that I live in this time period, when there are options!

Nicola,

This particular mom I was talking about had latch issues at the very beginning and they never fixed that, baby refused breast and she had a choice to pump and bottle feed with EMB or give a formula. She chose to pump. With her second ds she had no problems, he is still nursing great.

I pumped exclusively for 5 weeks when DS was little as he refused the breast.   It wasn't my first choice (obviously!) but the options were, as Monika said, to give formula or pump and give bottles of EBM.  DS did eventually figure out how to latch, and we have been breastfeeding successfully for 8 months.

Just wanted to put my story out there.  If you want more details, pm me.

Hi,

Thanks all for the clarification! I didn't think it would be through choice that a mum would express to bottle feed! I can only be grateful that my lo took to the breast well and I have been able to continue for 5 1/2 months so far (although for the first 4-5 weeks it was absolute hell, I am pleased that I persevered!).
