At what age can they have skin??
« on: January 18, 2006, 10:10:01 am »
Does anyone know when i can stop peeling fruit?  Apples and pears etc are ok but things like grapes and tomatoes are a nightmare to peel and i only give my DS fresh food not jars.
Any ideas?  Hes 9months (corrected 7months).
Thanks x

Most of the guidelines I've seen recommend peeling fruits and vegetables until 3 yrs of age. I always peel tougher-skinned food like apples and pears, but I never peeled grapes or tomatoes. Then again, Tyler was much older (probably 18 mo) when I introduced them. 9 mo is still pretty new to finger food, so I'd keep peeling for a bit longer.

DS is not on any kind of finger food yet - he can barely handle mashed food.  I was told tomato skin is very hard to digest, my friend gives her 10month old skin but she does say she poo's it out whole.   I will carry on peeling but i think ill let him have the skin on grapes when i do a puree - there a nightmare !!
thanks

To peel the tomatoe skin...put a gas burner on and put a fork into the tomato, then slowly turn the tomato around over the flame so the skin shrivels a little. This will make it easier to peel.

I keep skin on most things I feed LO (6 months).......Parsnips, carrots, potatoes pears etc....it is supposed to be the healthiest part of most fruit & veg.

I cut it into cubes, the put it in the microwave with a little water or juice.....put a lid on....nuke it for a while until soft.....then puree the whole lot down (inc. the liquid which has all the nutrients in it....she doesn't even notice it in her food.

I hope this is what you meant???
