food before milk?
« on: January 19, 2006, 10:24:03 am »
I'm thinking of trying something a bit earlier than normally recommended. DS has a good routine:

7am bottle
8am breakfast
9am bed
11am bottle
12 noon lunch (veggies)
1 pm bed
3.30pm tea (fruit)
5.30pm bath, bottle, bed

Recently he has only had half or less of his 11am bottle. I know it is recommended to swap to food before milk at 9 months, so that he still gets most of his nutrition from milk (formula) but I suspect if I swap now at 7 and a half months he will actually finish this lunchtime bottle.

The new routine would change at lunchtime:

11.30am lunch

1.30pm bottle, bed

Has anyone else swapped around the order at this stage? Did it make any difference? Is there any harm in trying?

my son has had his milk at different times to his food since 6 months. He is now 9 months and doing fine with 3 bottles a day one first thig, next about 3pm and last thing before bed. I would not worry too much as long as he eats ok and has the recommended amount of milk.

This might sound dumb but.....what is the recommended amount of milk?  Ethan still has 4 bottles a day, 7 - 8 oz each (the odd time he'll only have 3), usually before his meals.

I have just done the same thing recently as my daughter was doing the same refussing her 11am bottle. So she now has lunch at 12pm and her bottle at 1pm. She also has a bottle at 7am and 6.30pm all with 9oz (250mls) and is about to go onto 3 from 2 solid meals. She is healthy happy (well most of the time :-) and putting on great weight. I say do what works best for you and your baby.

Good luck :-)

I just took my daughter to the Doctor for her six month check up yesterday, and asked my Dr. the same question.  He said I should be giving her solids before breast feeding.  I,m not sure I agree with this. I.m worried that If I do this and she fills up on solids won't my milk supply decrease. I,m going to call for a second opinion.

Ethan David's mommy- recommended formula intake for a 10 mo old is 24-32 oz.

Shells- There's really no medical reason to offer solids first, it's really what works best for you and your baby. I did breast/bottle first with Tyler until we switched to whole milk at 1 yr because that's just what worked for us. I found that when I switched them and did solids first, he wanted NOTHING to do with bfing or bottles. So it's completely up to you!
