Won't eat veg anymore
« on: January 21, 2006, 21:18:54 pm »
Hi,  I am a new mom, and so confused on feeding.  My son is 6 months old and has been on cereal and fruit since 3 months, due to constipaton.  I started him on Veg 3 weeks ago.  He was doing fine and really enjoyed eating, until I tried to give him green bean and peas, which he would not eat, since then veg have been a hugh fight.  Fruit was fine, again, until he cut 2 teeth in one day and had his needles(all in the same day).  That was3 days ago now.  I can't get anything in him, except his bottle.  How do I get him to start eating again.  This is how I was feeding him: breakfast 1/4 dry cereal, Lunch 2tbps veg and 2 tbsp fruit, same for dinner.  Also how much cereal per day should he take?  The health nurse also said to start him on meat and egg yolk, but I can't even get veg in him.  Any help would be great.  This mom thing is really fustrating.  I feel like I am failing.  Thanks

You're not failing!! I know how frustrating it can be, but my best advice to you is to take a deep breath and relax! It's really common for babies' appetites and preferences to vary a lot from day to day because of teething, illness, or who knows what. Because he's still so young, formula should still be his main source of nutrition for several more months. Solids are only for practice and nutritional supplementation, so if he decides to take a break from solids for a few days, that's okay. As long as you don't try to force the issue or make mealtimes into a battle, he'll come back around when he's ready. New tastes and textures, like veggies, can throw a wrench in things sometimes. Have you tried mixing them with something he does like? You can gradually increase the proportion of veggies you mix in as he gets used to them. It may take some time, but that's okay...there's no rush!

As for the amount of cereal, it really depends. Cereal can be pretty constipating and filling, so if he's still pooping okay and taking 26-32 oz of formula per day, then 1/4 cup is probably about right for him. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Suggestion - lesson the fruit, go to veggies.

When on fruit, they tend to reject the taste of veggies due to the sweetness of the savoury fruit :)  We were advised by our doctor and other moms (support groups I am with) to start off with cereal and then veggies THEN fruit.

Again - everyone is different. I still gave my son fruit with his cereal :)  Helped him EAT it as he hated the plain rice one! LOL

Hang in there... *hug*
