Any one sided nursing mums out there?!!
« on: January 22, 2006, 21:22:45 pm »
I want to ask your advice, DS is now having 3nursings a day and I am really struggling to keep my supply up. I decided it might be best to nurse from the same boob all the time so yesterday and to day I have let him nurse off the left boob at all nursings, obv. he hasnt really had much milk. How did you go about being a one sided BF. I havnt had any probs. with my right boob (always the worst for supply anyway) I havnt even pumped or felt any pain, Is this okay? I just worried I am doing it wrong and going to loose my supply alltogether. Please help!!!!

I was like that from the third week on. Dd didn't want to bother with my left one so after some struggle, I decided to give up and just feed from one breast only. As it was in the very beginning of my nursing I had no problems with supply, I always offered the right one only and let dd work on supply. The left one dried up eventually, I didn't pump and I was OK, no engorgement there. I guess, it is because I had so little milk in there, dd has never really latched on well on that one. To tell the truth, after two years, I still occasionally leak from that dried up breast, maybe once in six months, can you believe it? So  this is my experience.

Now, to answer your question, you can absolutely do it with one breast only. And I can understand why you don't want to bother with offering and pumping. If you keep offering one breast only, you may need to offer it initially a little more often if possible, treat it lilke a growth spurt. Eventually your body will start producing an adequate amount of milk in your left one and everything will be fine.

The downside is that you will end up lopsided but I figured that I didn't really care that much about it. At first I put a pad in my left bra but now I don't even remember to do this. My left boob is a pre-pregnancy size while the right one is hmmm, bigger LOL. I think I would be horrified ten years ago to see myself so careless about it but now I just don't bother. And I am a person that likes to be well put together, if you kwim.

Good luck with your one sided nursing, it is not so unusual, there are plenty of other moms doing it. I know that many extended nursing moms sooner or later end up with one preferred breast only.

Liam has always been worse on the right side & a few weeks ago went from only taking it first & last feed (mostly as top up) to COMPLETELY rejecting it.... I am not going to "fight him on it" I express from the right side for milk for cereal & other foods/drinks... I get about 200mls a day from it & just feed him from the left. Aiden was always better on the right & it used to be bigger when I stopped nursing him, so maybe this is natures way of me being balanced when I stop.

We're one sided too.  It was the same w/ Madeline.  I'm thinking the left side just doesn't make as much.  But there's plenty with one, so we're happy.  Every now and then I offer the other, but she 's never interested for very long.  Haven't had any problems except a little lopsided.

Thank for your replys! I had to let DS have the right breast this morning it was getting sore but he hadnt fed off it for two days so hopefully it will get the drift soon.  As for being wonky my right boob has always been v.noticbly bigger than the left since I got pregnant so I am hoping the right will get smaller and the left bigger then they will be even! What a good job DH loves me he never seem to notice the difference, the other day he came home with a gift for me it was a lovely new bra and knickers set the problem was it was a 32B which was the size I was when DH met me,LOL. More like 34E now,I dont if its sad that he still thinks I am thin or sweet!

I too have uneven breasts with the right breast producing much more than the left.  I still have my LO feed off the left to keep the milk flowing but the right always needs feeding off of since it gets engorged easily.

I am a new mom so new at the BF thing.  I guess its no biggie that one breast produces more than the other.  Do I still keep pumping or having him feed off the left every 3-4 or not worry about it so much?  My milk production will be ok even if one breast is making most of the milk?  Any tricks out there to keep them as even as possible?

Thanks gang

As long as your lo is eager to nurse from both, offer him both. That way you will not be so lopsided. You may keep nursing like that or he may start refusing the one that is producing less. As long as he is given a chance to feed to his content, it doesn't matter if you feed from both sides or one only. If you start to nurse from one side only, make sure he has an opportunity to nurse innitially more often from it to stimulate your production in that breast.

As far as pumping to keep your breast even, I personally didn't find time and energy to do it, instead I just gave up and started putting a nursing pad in my bra. If you want to do it, it is a great idea to pump and freeze for future use or so your dh can feed from time to time.
