When can you stop boiling water?
« on: January 22, 2006, 21:26:08 pm »
Hi.  I was just wondering about boiling water.  Right now, when I'm boiling the water to make up Ethan's formula, I always add a little extra that I can cool off and put in his sippy cup for him to drink.  Does anyone know when I can just give him water from the tap, or filtered through a Brita, to drink?  Thanks.

I've heard it's when they reach 6 months, but I still can't bring myself to do this... Need to wean myself off boiling but I think I'd go half and half for a while. Does that seem odd?

I have to admit I have never boiled DS water, his is BF and only started to drink it at 7months and it hasnt done him any harm so I think as your DS is 10months it should be fine. My MIL is a health visitor and she also gives DS tap water, HTH.

Oooo, Nome, that's interesting, I was just wondering this myself, I'm still doing it and ds is nearly 10 months, and it's driving me crazy! TBH, I can't really see why it's necessary any more, but I suppose it's just habit & fear of 'weaning myself off it' (well put :) ).

Thanks for the info
Caroline :)

I think DD was about 12 months old before we stopped it.

Wow - I am amazed at this. In Ontario, Canada we are told we can stop at 4 months and so I did. I haven't been boiling the tap water since my DD was 4 months old and she has been fine. That is also when we are told we can stop steralizing bottles etc....Ask your doctor if you can just to see.
I do notice a difference when we are at my parent's house.  She has different bowel movements and I think it has to do with the water but other then that she is fine.

This is from their website:
- Bottles for breast milk or formula and the water used to prepare formula should be sterilized until your baby is 4 months of age.
- Well water should be tested regularly. Contact the Environmental Health at 519-663-5317 ext. 2300 for more information.

Good luck!
