Pregnant and BFing
« on: January 23, 2006, 16:34:04 pm »
i have just discovered i am pregnant! (hooray!!) this has happened way faster than dh and i thought it would (well, than i thought it would then, he can't believe i have gone and duped him into pregnancy again under the guise of "it could take us a year to get pregnant!")
my ds is still very much enjoying his bfing and i desperately want him to be bf for as long as possible.
can anyone give me their best tips for keeping a good supply going?  please, please, please!
BTW-i work three days a week, feed at 6am, between 11 and 12, 8pm and a dreamfeed everyday (i run to the nursery to feed my days off, also i pump at 7:30 so that maybe i can get rid of 11 feed sometime before Ethan is one)
any thoughts on what i can do to keep bfing would be recieved greatfully!

First of all congratualtions!! I just want to emphasise the things we all allready know and do, now you PG you have to do all these thing twice as much. Poor you!!! :)

1. Drink LOTS!!
2. Rest LOTS!!
3. Eat LOTS!!
4. Dont listen to anyone that tells you it cant be done as I know plenty of women that have BF whilst pregnant, its so nice knowing you are nourishing both your babies and yourself.  Some people may be negative (they were to me) but just ignore them then come on here and moan about them to us!

A great book that was recommended to me to read is "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" by Hilary Flower. (Because now you're eating for 3!)

I agree with the PP, increasing your calories, drinking plenty of water (100+ounces per day), and getting a nap as many days as possible will help your supply. Expect to be tired, it is ok, just don't ask too much from yourself. (Power shopping all morning Saturday can affect your supply, I've found!)

LLL has a great forum for pregnant and nursing mothers:

Hi Maggie,

I'm right there with you!  Though I'm only nursing twice a day and my milk is not as important nutritionally at this stage as yours is to your lo.  Unfortunately, I have really noticed a decrease in my supply since becoming pg, but I think if I fed more frequently I would have less of a problem.  As everyone else said, eat well and eat lots, and drink, drink, drink!  If you want, you can pm me and we can work through the hard parts of nursing while pg together!

i just wanted to thank all you ladies again for the support.  unfortunately i miscarried last week (a whole other thread that i think most of you found) but after lots of crying, thinking, support and searching my soul i know that being pregnant again will be what really makes me feel like i have some resolution on my miscarriage so we will be ttc again in march or april and next time i will start my eating, resting and drinking right from ttc in the hopes that i can continue to bf my ds AND have a successful pregnancy!
i so wish we could have been pming Sabrina but i will be thinking of you and sending you bossy drink lots vibes as well as gentle good luck with bfing vibes  ;D

{{{HUGS}}} Maggie.  It looks like I'll be in this same boat, too. :'(  Unless I beat the pretty bad odds and this little bean starts growing and his/her heart starts beating faster.  So maybe we will be able to go through this together after all.
