From Formula to Milk- How?
« on: January 23, 2006, 22:07:11 pm »
My son is 11 months and still takes 4, 6oz bottle and 3 solid feedings a day.  I want to go to cow's milk, my doctor approved, but don't know how.  I wanted to stop using a bottle but he hates using a sippy cup.  How do I cut back on the amount of bottles he takes a day without him getting hungry?  24oz of milk plus the cheese and yogurt he eats seems like too much dairy.  His formula seems to keep him so full, so if I stop giving it to him won't he be hungry???

Thanks

Also, any suggestions on how I get him to use a sippy cup?  Is a bottle with milk, ok????

When i changed Molly onto "white Juice" i started by changing just the morning bottle . She didn't like the taste at first and kept asking for her usual milk but i kept trying and she realised that she would have 'white juice' every morining and started to prefer it. I gradually changed another bottle until she didn't have formulae anymore.

About a month before this i changed the teat on her bottle to the soft Advent sippy that fits on the same bottles as the teats do. I was quite ruthless because i needed to buy some new teats and was so fed up with spending hours cleaning them everyday that i just threw them away. It took 2 days and she was using the sippys all the time.  (although i nearly gave in a few times when she gave me that look that breaks your heart cause the bottle was 'broken').  But the good thing was the bottle was still the same which she preferred and after she had adapted to the new way of drinking with the sippy she was fine, 2 weeks after she would drink out of any sippy cup. I glad i did it earlier rather than now though (she was 1 when i changed) caused shes a lot more persistent now - she just helps herself!

Tyler was taking the exact same amount of formula when we started him on whole milk at 11.5 mo. Before that, he only used the sippy cup to, well, sip. He'd have maybe a sip or 2 and that was it. I randomly picked a bottle (lunch) and stopped offering it cold turkey. I gave him solids with a 6 oz sippy of milk instead. I offered the sippy periodically during the day so he could take a sip here and there. I waited a few days for his appetite to adjust then dropped another bottle. After about 1 month, 3 of his 4 bottles were gone (we waited a couple more months to drop the bedtime bottle for other reasons). He wasn't drinking near enough milk yet, so we made up for it with other dairy products like yogurt and cheese. He gradually got used to it and started guzzling milk like there was no tomorrow!

Some people will mix the formula and milk and gradually reduce the amount of formula in the sippy if their LO refuses to have anything to do with it. Oh, one more thing, the 24 oz per day guideline includes all dairy products, so you're right...24 oz plus cheese and yogurt is too much! :)

Hi

We went cold turkey with the formula and just gave cow's milk - but dd was only have two bottle by then (morning and evening). If you're worried about him being hungry without the bottles then try giving a snack when you would give the bottle (maybe a yoghurt) so he's filled up and still getting the dairy intake.

There's a cup you can get that is somewhere in between a bottle and a sippy cup (made by Nuby - http://www.photanical.com/2005/11/06/review-nuby-gripper-cup/). We found these worked great with DD for the transition from bottles.

They sell them at Asda/Walmart.

HTH

love
