7 month old vomiting after feedings
« on: November 07, 2005, 14:59:05 pm »
I have a 7 1/2 month old son.  I breastfed until 6 months (with one formula at bedtime) and then started solids.  After a week or so, I stopped breastfeeding completely.  He took to solids great and I have still been giving him his formula feeds.  Suddenly, about 3 weeks ago, he started projectile vomiting a lot after feeds.  We traveled to England to visit family and it started about 2 days after we got there.  He did have a bit of a cold/cough, so we thought the cough was making him vomit.  No temperature or fever at all though.  It's nearly 4 weeks later and he's still doing it and often not preceded by a cough.  Not after every meal, but often the first formula of the day and the one before bedtime.  He has about 5 ice cubes of food twice a day and formula 3 times a day, plus some before his midday solids.  My Ped. now thinks he had a stomach virus a few weeks ago and that his stomach is still irritated.  It's so inconsistent though and everytime I think he's getting better, it comes back again.  It's very frustrating and I don't know what to do....can anyone help?

7 month old vomiting after feedings

Hi Jonesync,
My 7 month old did this several times after his bedtime bottle and once after his 11am bottle (scared the you know what out of me! ) but it was also very inconsistent.  It also started happening once I weaned him off breastfeeding and started formula.  When they BF you really don't know how much they take in so you just kind of take their word for it when they pop off whereas with the bottle it's easy to try to push every last bit of formula into them.  So I figured it might be that I was overfeeding him and he was just taking it all in until he couldn't anymore.   I also noticed that it happened if I fed him his evening solids too close to bedtime which is 7:30pm.  So what I did was cut back on the amount of evening solids and give them to him before 5:30pm.  It hasn't happened since.
Just a thought.

Mine often vomited up her evening bottle, especially if she was really tired. I switched to rice thickened formula which I also give her first thing in the morning; frequently  vomited that one up as well. I think it was her reflux; has not happened since we switched formula.

Hi Chasmom,
Thanks for your advice - yesterday I decided to cut back on formula and you're right, I think I was pushing too much in and he must have decided he wants less formula.  I've been thrown by the recommended amount of formula and also my ped. told me that I wasn't overfeeding him.  But yesterday morning, he took about 3-4 oz, then when I gave him some more about 30 mins later, he threw up.  Since then, I've stopped when he's stopped and cut the bedtime bottle by 2oz and so far, so good, just a tiny bit more similar to reflux than full-on projectile vomming.  I've noticed that he takes his solids much better than some of my friends' babies, so his tummy must be full and I'm trying to overstuff it!  I guess my instinct was that I was over-feeding, but my ped. made me feel stupid really....I should trust my mummy instincts more!
Thanks so much, hopefully he'll keep his food down this week.

Hi to you all, I'm so glad that I'm not the only one with a vomiting baby! I've been trawling the internet to find reasons why LO is inconsistently projectile vomiting. Doc says a virus, mother in law says allergy I dont know what to think!
LO is nearly 9 months old and has been sick on and off for 2 weeks. Ive tried limiting solids, half strength formula, less formula more frequently, more formula less frequently, varied times of feed I think Ive tried everthing. He seems to be sick late afternoon and night time, he is off solids alltogether. He still has approx 1 pint of milk per day which he keeps down. Maybe I will start to limit his milk and encourage more solid food see how that goes. Any more advice?
