why does it say 12mth plus?
« on: January 25, 2006, 12:44:51 pm »
my dd is nearly 9mth and is enjoying finger food (rice cakes, bread sticks, raisons, banana, bread etc etc) i have recently bought some organic biscuits for her to try but when i got them home it said on the packed not suitable for under 12mth, these are the ingredients...

wheat flour
grape juice
palm oil
sunflower oil
oats
sunflower seeds
currants
raising agent
(all organic)

just wondering why it is demed as unsuitable for babies under a year?
if anybodys got any ideas that would be great!!

also, is this true...that breastfeeding about 15-20mins before or after a solid meal hinders good iron absorption? not sure if i read/heard this but wondered if anyone knew of anything like this???!!!

re: the biscuits. I asked my health visitor about this, and she said she reckons it's because they are very dry, and could present a choking hazard. In other words, it's not the ingredients that are the problem - it's the texture of the biscuit. You can buy biscuits for younger babies. Or you could go with the biscuits you have, but be around in case your wee one chokes.

My guess is that the biscuits contain wheat flour. Because wheat is a common allergen, it's sometimes recommended to hold off on introducing it until 1 yr. I haven't heard that nursing affects the body's absorption of iron. Breastmilk iitself contains iron, so I can't imagine that it would have an effect. Dairy products containing whole milk are a different story. There are theories that cow's milk can inhibit the body's absorption of iron. Maybe that's what you heard or read somewhere? HTH!

thanks!!!
i spoke to my sister about the biscuits and she said she'd bought some of them too, apparently they are very hard and she thinks that might be why they are labelled as not being suitable for babies under 12mths. i don't ever leave anwen alone while shes eating so i think they'll be ok, shes not got any teeth but is good at sucking things and i'm keen to introduce new flavours and textures.
re: milk thanks tylersmommy, its good to know as i often hold off giving breast milk straight after a solid meal incase it did affect it
thanks again guys!
