I had an early teether too, but I know a lot of babies who didn't get their first tooth until after they turned 1. Totally normal! For eating, it doesn't matter whether or not he has teeth, babies don't really "chew" until they've gotten some molars. Until then, they manage by gumming and squashing food against the roof of their mouth. Your 8 mo old can eat a lot of the same things we do...a good way to test is to put a bite in your mouth. If you can squash it against the roof of your mouth and get it to a swallow-able consistency, then it's okay for him. Obviously, avoid hard foods and choking hazards, and make sure that fruits and veggies are pretty soft until he gets the hang of it.
My DS never held his own bottle, and I don't know why. Lots of babies don't!
