help - superhungry baby!
« on: January 26, 2006, 09:09:15 am »
I wonder if anyone has any advice on this -
my 5 mnth old baby seems to be going through a huge growth spurt. Whereas before one full breast was enough for her, no she guzzles two in a few minutes and a week ago started waking up in the night every 4 hours, clearly starving. So I increased my milk supply by pumping between feeds and latching her on to the first breast for a second time when she'd finished the other side. Also, at the advice of my paediatrician, I've started giving her some grated apple, mixed with the pumped breast milk, for breakfast, and I give her more pumped milk as an extra snack at around 5. She's nearly 5 months and weighs 7.5-7.75K, which is pretty big I think, especially as she was only 6 pounds (2.7K) when she was born. Even though I'm giving her more to eat in the day she's still waking up in the night on a feeding schedule - I know she's not feeding just for comfort because now as soon as she empties a breast she stops and looks up at me as if to say 'was that all I get?' I'm worried that in feeding her in the night I'll set up a bad pattern. Also, although my milk supply has always been very good (if I do a yield I get about 150ml from one full breast), I'm struggling to eat enough myself to sustain the baby, and am now 2K,or 4-5 pounds less than I was when I got pregnant (I'm 5ft 8 and only weigh 9 stone now). I don't know what more I can do - any advice please??!!!!

Hi Vic!  :)

Its sounds to me as though you have done all the right things regarding increasing supply etc and although I am not one to go against recommendations it may well be that she is ready for solids. Have you tried a little baby rice instead of apple you may find she is more full after that.  I started my DS on solids at 5months as like you my boobs just couldn't keep up with his demands  :o

I wouldn't be too concerned at the minute about her feeding in the night because if she is as you say genuinely hungry once she is getting enough calories in the day she should hopefully drop these without much fuss. You sound very clued up to me so I am sure you would know if she was habit waking or not.  How long has she been feeding like this? It sounds like a growth spurt and may well settle down a little in a few days time. Keep us posted. HTH

thank you! it is really nice to get some reassurance. The little guzzler is still waking at around 1.30 but is slowly taking more milk and solids in the day - I'm just about to try the baby rice, so fingers crossed. I guess it's just hard when you feel you're having all your strength just sucked out of you!
thanks so much again
