need advice on solids and fluids and stuff
« on: January 28, 2006, 16:33:00 pm »
Okay.  My baby will be 7 months on Monday.

He has solids 3 times a day.
I nurse him when he wakes
an hour later I give him fruit (4-6oz) some times mixed with cereal
3 hours later I nurse again
an hour later I give him veggies (3-5oz)
3 hours later I nurse again and give him some veggie puffs
1.5 hours later he has dinner (3-5oz of veggies and 2-4oz of fruit sometimes mixed with cereal)
Then I nurse right before bed and a dreamfeed
He gets water with his solids in a sippy (he will only take a few gulps)

Today we tried to use a bottle for his first feed.  I want to ween him at 9 months and before he has refused the bottle.  I put some breastmilk that I pumped 5 months ago (been in big freezer).  My breasts don't respond to the pump now.  He took 3.5oz of the bottle (YAE!!!) but then refused it.  I even gave it to him!  But then he was grumpy and winey so I decided to BF him and see how much he would take.  Well he took a full side but then not the other side.

How many onces should he be getting at a feeding?
And how do I get him to take that much out of the bottle?
Do I refuse to nurse him after the intial hunger wears off and he refuses the bottle?
Now that I know he can take it I'm just wondering how much I should try and get him to take.

I am no expert but if possible I would try having your husband/boyfriend/friend try feeding him his bottles at first.  Perhaps even choose a time of day that he always gets a bottle to start off and get him used to taking the bottle regularly.  Then introduce it more and more, weening him from the breast.  Often babies refuse the bottle from mom when they know they can nurse.

As far as how much he should be taking... it's a bit individual.  For my son (8mo) who takes formula and also has solids 3 times per day, he typically eats 4-5oz at a feeding.  Our pediatrician told us to try to get to 24oz of formula each day but we usually are between 20-24 for the day.

HTH!

Thank you!  That helped alot!
He just took a bottle really well.
I tried to nurse him but he wanted to watch his daddy play his video game.
So I tried giving him a bottle and he took 4oz!!  I think he may start liking the bottle
more because he can look around and watch stuff.  I really think he will enjoy the
bottle because he is a spirited baby that's always on the go!
