green poo
« on: January 30, 2006, 01:34:10 am »
Hi everyone, my lo is almost 4 months old and is exclusively breastfed. He has thick green stools on and off. I've eliminated dairy and soy and it improved, but it has recently returned. I'm not sure what I have eaten. Is this ever normal?? Could an allergy cause it? He doesn't cry with feeds or anything and he's eating every 3 1/2 -4 hrs so if it is an allergy it only seems to show up in his stool. Any advice? thanks

Green poop can actually be normal for some babies. Some lactation consultants suggest it is from getting more foremilk than hindmilk. If your lo doesn't seem bothered by it, and there is no diaper rash associated with the poop, then I would cautiously say it is fine.

I agree with the previous post. It can certainly be normal. Dr Jack Newman who is one of the world's leading breastfeeding experts says on the subject of green poop, "If the baby is content and gaining well, ignore the comments from well-meaning friends. Buy yourself a pair of sunglasses so you don't see the color". I think it can sometimes mean a feed has had a lot of foremilk but even that is not always the case. If this is your only 'symptom' I would not worry.

I had that question in mine too. My DS had green poop for a week, but he seemed happy and was in no discomfort. That's good to know.

Thank you so much for the reply. That's a relief. The foremilk thing makes sense because it happens more when he's not eating very good and I switch sides after only a few minutes on the first one. Thanks.

I ad the same issue for a few weeks wiht my lo.... I was concerned, and tried the whole staying on one breast longer...foremilk/hindmilk thing.... It helped, but then it returned... I was eating SPINACH!  I went through a phase were I ate lots of spinach, and thus so did my lo!   ;)

Hi there, our 17wk old DD has the 'green poop' thingee on and off. We took her to the doctors and the doc said that meant that she is very gassy.....which is totally the case!!!!! She said not to worry and that if she is sleeping and feeding well and pooping every 5-6 days.....I thought this was way to long!! then all is fine.
Not too sure if this is the case with your LO. I hope the poop turns back to its original colour!!!!!
Cheers

Same here - Billy has varying shades of poo, the other day it was bright green. Usually associated with if he hasn't been feeding too well. Hope that reassures you a bit!
