Confused, tired and at a loss with EASY
« on: January 30, 2006, 18:15:58 pm »
I'm so so confused, and being so tired isn't helping me think clearly either. So, here's the thing: dd has stopped taking long naps, and having 45 minute naps throughout the day. At first I thought this was due to having to wake her up in the middle of her naps so often (visits to the doc, shots, pick up big sister, etc), that she unlearned how to get herself back to sleep. So, I tried to teach her how to do it again. BUT, I do not have the time to do this because of big sister, also I don't have the will-power to see it through beyond the first hour. So, as a result her 3-hour EASY is going down the drain. I try to keep to the feeding schedules in spite of her early wakings, so I wait for her hungry cries, and it usually falls in the right time. Night times are a problem also. She stopped doing her 6 hour stretch and has been waking every 2, 2 1/2 hours for the last week (so it's not a growth spurt). I was way too tired to attempt anything, so I fed her, like I used to whenever she woke (because she would only wake out of hunger, and I just fell into that pattern). Now, when she wakes and I feed her, she has a half-feed, and cries when I put her down to sleep.

Could she be ready for 4-hour EASY (she's 12 weeks tomorrow)?
I'm putting the sleep questions on the sleep forum, but any suggestions ???

((((((((((HUGS)))))))))) it is so hard to do EASY when you are utterly exhausted!!!  Is there anyone else around to help you out...maybe taking your older lo during the younger ones nap time so that you can concentrate more on doing shh/pat with her?  if not, maybe just try to concentrate on the nights for now.  Are you still swaddling her? Do you have a DH that can help at night to shh/pat?  Maybe try doing a 3.5 hr EASY to get her to start taking bigger feeds to get more calories in during the day, then slowly transition her to 4 hr easy.  I think she may be just a bit young to do a complete 4 hour easy just yet but she probably could do a 3.5 hr EASY.  Good Luck!!!!!!

I'm going through the same thing with an 11 week old (though I don't have the second child... I don't know how you ladies do it!). What I've been doing recently (and it's helped) is EASAE or EASSE because I found I was feeding her after her short naps and this was giving her 9-10 feeds in a day ::). When she wakes from her 45 minute nap I now do activity again until feed time. Once in the day she will nap longer or wake to sleep again so she has 3 45min naps and 1 1.5-2 hour nap.

Thanks for the replies. Well, guess what, I tried going in her room to catch the 45 min. mark and extend her naps and it has worked today so far (2 naps). She would wake up happy after the 45 mins., but she is a textbook/angel baby so I'm attributing it to that, rather than she just wouldn't need to sleep so much. What made me think she wasn't sleeping enough was that she started waking at night too, so my guess was overtiredness.
I'm going to extend her 3rd nap too, and keep at it for the next days, and see how that affects her nightsleep. I am paying closer attention to her awake times, and her cues so we can transition to 4-hour EASY when we get there, but in the meantime we're sticking to 3 hours. Maybe when her sleep gets sorted out I'll be surprised ...

Yeah!!!  Good to hear the wake to sleep is helping for naps....i'm sure overtiredness was contributing to the night waking! Good Luck with continued success...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!  ;)

Here's some signs of needing to transition.  Also, it doesn't have to go straight 3-4 but rather a 3-3.5 if need be  :)
