Introducing 10 week old son with down syndrome to bottle
« on: January 30, 2006, 21:52:10 pm »
hope that someone out there may be able to offer advice as there is such a wealth of experience and knowledge between every one. :)
Am hoping to introduce my son to expressed breast milk from bottle over next week or so.  We have done very well to breast feed as he has down syndrome, but despite potential diffficulties he has done very well putting on 12oz a week past few weeks.  Have tried him a few times with avent teat 1 as have the bottles etc left from eldest baby boy (he's 15 mnths old!!) but he doesn't make any attempt to suck though he doesn't immediately refuse it.  Anyone have any ideas on best teats etc for sucking problems (he has a long tongue) that have worked for them?

Thanks for help

Kate

Hi Welshmummy
Congrats on the birth of your son and hope all is going well, fair play to ya with two babies so close together. I dont have any experience with down syndrome but I fed my ds for 3 months and found the Tommee Tippee Nuby range great as they have dimples like nipples!!!  My dh held the teat in his mouth for a few seconds then started sucking away and we havent looked back yet.  Sorry if I couldnt be for anymore help.

Hi Kate,

The haberman feeder (which you can check out on this site and/or google it... was also recommended by Tracy) is supposed to be good for babes with Down's, cleft and lip palates, etc.

Hope that helps a little! :)

 :)
thanks for advice.
Will have to have a good go at expressing small batches of milk over the weekend when husband around to help with my little 15month old (wanted to have a go at pumping for me the last time I tried when he was around ;D!!) Will then be able to have a good stint of perservering with bottles next week without added issue of introducing taste of formula :o
Will report back on progree - post may help other mums in similar situation in the future.
 ;)

We used boots orthdontic teats as they are flatter in shape and the milk comes out of a hole at the roof of mouth istead of end of teat/down the throat in other bottles. Works wonders for DD who was a very hard sucker.

I HIGHLY recommend the Haberman for you.  I work with lo's with feeding issues all the time and I really think this will be the best thing for you.  I even use one with my own lo who had nipple confusion.  They are expensive, but worth every red cent to get your babe to take a bottle.  Hope you find something that works for you!
