4 bottles to 3???
« on: January 31, 2006, 01:01:52 am »
Looking for advice. The last week or so my 7.5 month old is not taking all of her bottles.

Here is what she was doing:

7am - wake and 6 oz
7:30am - solids (cereal and fruit)
Activity and nap

11:15am - bottle - 5-6oz
11:45am - solids - veggies, fruit and cereal
activity and nap

3:30pm - bottle - 6oz
5pm - Solids - same as lunch

7pm - bottle - 8oz
no dream feed - never has and usually sleeps through the night

Now she will take her morning bottle, only take 3oz around 11 and maybe 5oz at 3:30 but still her 8oz (or almost at bed).  Any thoughts. Should I try to get her down to 3 bottles?  If so, at what times?  The last three mornings she has slept in until 7:45 or 8am...

Hello  :)

Since she's taking only 3oz at 11:00, that is the one that I would drop first.  I would offer her the solids at 11:15 and then follow up with the bottle to "wash it down".  Does she take a sippy?  If so, I would offer that with her meals too.  :)

My DD was starting to do the exact samr thing to me about a month ago so i dropped a bottle and just increased the amounts of each bottle. She is actually taking more in a day now than when she was having 4 bottles.
Here is when she has her solids and bottles:

7am - Bottle 8.5oz
8am - Cereal and Fruit
12pm - Yighurt/Castard
1pm - Bottle 8oz
5pm - Veges
6.30pm - Bottle 8.5oz

Hope this helps.

She does take a sippy but not a lot gets swallowed. I have offered her formula in a sippy before but it seems like such a waste...perhaps I will offer her some again though just to see.  Do I offer her formula in one sippy and water in another or just formula?

Today she took only 4oz at the 7:30am feeding but I used another oz in her breakfast.  I  won't offer her a bottle when she gets up and see how it goes.

Thanks for the thoughts.

So far so good. She took 7 oz at 3:15 and then 8.5 at 7pm.  I think I might have a new routine...we'll see what the next few days brings.

Oh, forgot to mention.  As far as the sippy goes....my recommendation is to just keep offering formula in the sippy until she gets it down.  A lot of times, when offered water or juice...they'll refuse to drink formula from it.  ;)

Well it didn't go so well. She woke up just before 5am sobbing. I tried to calm her without a bottle but no dice. I gave her a couple of oz and thought she would go back to sleep. About 40 min later she woke sobbing again.  I gave her the morning bottle then (7.5oz) and she took almost all of it. Obviously she was hungry because the last couple of days she will only take about 5oz in the morning.

Not sure what to do today. I think I will offer her 4 bottles and see what she takes.  Maybe she was just having off days?

Noelle- BTW- are you suggesting don't offer water in sippy cups at all?  Confused about that since everything says that formula fed babies should have water with their solids.

Well I went back to offering 4 bottles. Today she had a full bottle at 7:30, an almost full bottle at 12:20, 3oz at 3:45 and 8.5 at 6:45pm.  I think the routine is now to offer one smaller bottle during the day and three normal sized bottles.  This is fine for me right now....

Yep, that is what I suggest.  I have never read or heard of that before about the water? Hmmm...I didn't give either of my babies water (except a little here and there) until they knew how to use the sippy/straw cups.  Though both of them started using the straw cups for feedings at 7-8 months and so they then got water more often...

I think her lack of interest in 4 bottles was a teething issue. She is back to taking all 4 bottles and even more formula then ever.  She had her first tooth come through yesterday. Thanks for the advice!

Hi my nearly 8 month old seems to be wanting to drop one of her feeds also.

Her schedule is

7 ish bottle about 8 oz
7.30a to 8 am breakfast rice cereal and formula
9 to 9.30 ish a sleep

11 ish a bottle (this is the one she doesn't usually want.
12 ish lunch fruit or yoghurt
1 ish a sleep until about 2.30pm or 3 pm.

3ish to 3.30pm a bottle
5 ish dinner meat and veges

7 ish a bottle and bed

she sleeps until 6.30 7 am.

Just wondering if i should drop the 11 am feed. She doesn't seem to eat much food. Should i replace the 11 am bottle with some fruit and have lunch a bit later? Does any one have any suggestions?

Thanks
Bec

My DD is also doing the same thing. The 11.00am feed is usually really small, he is also teething (our first tooth came through yesterday as well  ;D)but still enjoying the solids. I reckon that he will atke what he needs ... but maybe is also ready for 3 feeds a day ... will give it a go too. We are also moving from breast to formula so is quite scarry actually seeing how much they do or DON"T feed, on the breast is very hard to tell!

Good luck and I look forward to reading how it is all going for you guys. ;)
Nothing is forever so make sure it is good!

Thought I would update you and let you know where things are at.  Abbi is 8 months old today.  She seems to be kind of off of her solids or at least not as excited so I have introduced a number of finger foods to help boost her interest again.

7:30am bottle (6-7oz)
8:30am solids - cereal or toast with fruit
10 or 10:30am - nap (1 or 2 hours)
11:45am - bottle (5-7oz)
12:15 - solids - veggies and maybe some cheerios or other finger food
2:30 - nap - depending on how long her morning nap is and when she gets up she might skip this nap
3:30 or 4pm - 2oz bottle for snack
5pm - solids - cereal with fruit or whatever I can get her to eat - tonight it was cheerios, a few spoonfuls of cereal with apricots and a little bit of cheese

6pm - bedtime and bottle (6-8oz) if no afternoon nap (she has a bath before bed)
6:45 or 7pm bedtime if she has an afternoon nap

sleep until 7 or 7:30....
