Weird naps
« on: January 31, 2006, 21:09:01 pm »
Jency has a consistance routine (for the most part)
He get's up around 7:30am
Then he goes down for his morning nap 2-2.5 hours later and goes down great and sleeps for 1.5-2 hours straight through. Wakes up talking.
He then stays up for another 2-2.5 hours and acts tired and grumpy. So I do his nap routine but then he doesn't go down good and wakes up 30min later crying (which means he hasn't gotten enough sleep). I then put him back to sleep and he wakes up again after 30-45 min.
He then stays up for 3-4 hours. If he takes a good 2 hour afternoon nap (straight through) he is wonderful but if he takes his usual nap that I just described he is a bear.
Any suggestions on what to do?

I'm not sure why he is even doing this so I don't know how to fix it.
Okay just remembered something.  It seems like 9 out of 10 of the times he wakes after 30 min it is to have a poopy diaper.
Is there some way to change when he has his 'stinky' (that is what we call them)?  Should I change him and put him back down or just put him back down?  I have been just waiting until he finished his pooping and then pu/pd until he goes back to sleep.  But then he would only sleep for another 30-45min.  I think because of the dirty diaper.

Hi there,

Regarding his second nap, if he is having difficulty going down and waking after 30 minutes it sounds like he might be overtired.  When you say he is up 2-2.5 hours, is it closer to 2.5 most times?  15 minutes can make a big difference.  Maybe try cutting back his A time 15 min. and see if he goes down better.  What time is he going down to bed?  Is there a reason he needs to be up 3-4 hours?  4 hours is a very long time for a baby that age.

As for the poopy diaper I think that's up to you.  Might as well try to change him for a couple of days and see if he goes back down.  I know my DS wouldn't.  How soon before nap are you feeding him?  Maybe feed him a touch earlier and hope he does his stinky before nap begins?  Or maybe you can figure out if a certain food is triggering it and offer that at a different time.

If my DD poos in her nappy during her nap time, and wakes up as a result, I quickly change her, (she doesn't like a poopy nappy) avoid any eye contact, don't talk and then put her back to bed.  9 times out of 10 she will go right back to sleep.
