another thing i wanted to ask , is it possible to give the paci back only in a different way so the baby wont wake up at night so often for it , but that he will know he has something to calm him down when he goes to sleep or during the day ?

thank you for answering ,
i've been trying to give him a few soft things but he didnt get attached to any of them so much , i'm worried that it might mean that he wont have a way to calm himself and to feel secure when he will need to , i never knew a baby that didnt have a paci so i realy dont know what its like .

Has he actually fallen asleep without the pacy yet, or is this going to be the first time you try?  I know with dd#2 (6 month old now) she actually has started rejecting the pacy on her own and seems to sucking on her tongue (at least that is what it looks like).  If you do it young enough (like you are doing) I think they can transition to something else (either external or internal) fairly easily.

Now if I just could get my 3 year old off her pacy for sleeping  :D

Good luck

;) Yes a child can fall asleep without a thumb or paci.  My dd(6 mons old) has never had a paci and never wanted one.  Of course, i pushed in on her everyday, but she would get MAD when I tried to give it to her.  I finally gave up and she learned how to fall asleep on her own.  Granted it did take months for this to happen but it finally did.  She is put in her crib awake and does go to sleep without a fuss most nights.  When she wakes during the night she turns over and is fast asleep once again.  Yes i do realize that most babies need the comfort of a paci or other dummy, but yes they do not always have to have one.  By the way,  I have a 2 year old that still has his paci ::)  and I am dreading the day that we have to get rid of it.  He does depend on it to go to sleep.  So i guess i can say i have had the best of both worlds.

if you want to use a soft toy, then i would just try one and just always put it into the cot, it does take some time for them to become attached, how did you go last night?

you can also try sleeping with the comfort object in your bed a few nights so it smells like you.

My DD is 5 mos. and she's never had a paci nor does she suck her thumb.  Like someone else said, the road to independent sleep was somewhat more difficult, but she drifts off like a champ these days!  She does have a blanket, both of my kids became attached to these blankets by Gund called Dottie Dots, she has a kitty and my son has a puppy AND a duck, they are small  and lightweight and they LOVE them.  Just something to consider, but yes it is possible for them to sleep without a thumb/paci! :)

Yes your LO can!! We just took away our lo's soother and he had it every day and naptime from the second day home! Our lo is just over 4 months old and although he was a little upset for the first couple days (which is very sad  :'( ), he is perfectly fine falling asleep now and, it has only been a week tomorrow! He has not started to suck his thumb while sleeping yet and, although he does have a stuffy and blankie he does not suck either of them when he is sleeping (though he does like to hold the blankie to the side of his face!). Personally I think that if you are going to take it away you should make sure you are strong not to cave after if he starts to get upset for it because it isn't fair to your lo, however that is only my opinion! Just wanted to let you know that they can do it and that I have proof!!  :)
Good Luck! :)

Hello everyone , and thank you so much for answering ,  :)
after more than 2 weeks of waking up 5 to 8 times at night to give the paci back , my lo slept the whole night , he woke up once , made some sounds and went back to sleep on his own , now all we've got left to do is to make it easier for him to go to sleep , with the paci we used to put him in bed and he fell asleep in no time , he never used to cry before falling asleep , so its hard that he's crying before having a nap and before going to sleep at night , it happends that he falls asleep in our arms but we dont want him to get too used to it , so any advise will be great , i know that giving him the paci back is not fair and that i should be strong because i dont want him to have to part with it a second time and at an age that it will be much more difficult , but i'm worried , how it will be in the future , is it hard to calm a baby that doesnt have a paci ? like after getting his vaccinations , when he was crying so much , the paci was a real life saver !!! and i know there is much more to come . so is there a way to give back the paci for the realy hard moments , like crying and falling asleep and not to make him so dependant on it , or better not to even try it ???

Great news!! glad you had a better night!!
I can't help you out to much there as our lo isn't that fussy during the day (I hear we are lucky!  :) ), and at bedtime he has always fussed a little before drifting off. We just pick LO up and shush and pat him and he calms fairly easily. Not really sure what else to suggest about calming... maybe singing or just talking softly will help lo out. I have heard of people weaning lo off the Paci. by letting them use it a little while drifting off but taking it out before the lo is totally off to sleep, I personally don't know anything about that. I also know that some people use it while driving and other short periods of time but again, I'm not sure how that works. We decided to take the whole thing away as we didn't want him to get attached to it again. Poor lo's, it must be so hard for them as they don't know why they aren't getting back something they have become to depend on :'(
Good luck, sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
