Weaning tips needed please!
« on: February 04, 2006, 09:11:59 am »
My little one is 5 months and I've recently started introducing some solid food.  He's 5 months and was taking 5 9oz bottles a day so thought it was time to start him.

I've started introducing one meal, but don't really know where to go from here.  His current schedule is like this:

7am - milk (about 6oz)
10:30am - 2 cubes of food.  Usually something like Sweet Potato or Butternut Squash
11:00am - milk (only takes about 5oz as he's just had his solids)
3:00pm - milk (about 7-8oz)
6:45pm - milk (about 7.5-8oz)
11pm - dreamfeed (about 8-9oz)

Where do I go from here?  We've been on just the one meal for quite a few weeks so should I introduce more?  Perhaps a breakfast?  Could I give him a breakfast at say 7am and then the milk at about 8am?  His morning nap is at about 8:30am so couldn't be too late.

Any advice really gratefully received!  Am struggling a bit to know what to do!

Hi, at this age your solids are really just for "practice" and getting used to eating textured things and milk really should provide the vast majority of your LO's nutrition.  So, I definitely wouldn't do a meal before your first milk feed right now as it might cause him to take less of his bottle.  If you're comfortable with your routine the way it is, there isn't really a need to change it right now.  If you want to add a meal, I would add dinner sometime between your last two milk feeds (not including the dream feed).  You can do similar foods, or do rice  or some other sort of cereal or something like that (you can mix it with formula and then not worry about losing those nutrients).

Good luck, I found introducing solids to be one of the more confusing things to do.  Tracy gives some great advice in Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems in the solid food chapter as well if you're looking for a reference.

I agree - I would possible add a small amount of solids at around 5 or 6 pm, just to keep him going. You'll be able to tell when he seems hungrier again. Then, you could start giving him a bigger amount of solids at that stage.
It really all does work out in the end. I had no clue what to do with anything to begin with, and it sort of ended up falling into place.

good luck.  x
