one nap a day?
« on: February 05, 2006, 13:25:54 pm »
hi there!
dd is nearly 10 months old. I think she is ready for one nap a day. She currently wakes up between 7 and 8 am.  For the last 3 days she's had just one nap (2-2 1/2hours)at 12:30. I can't believe that is enough. She was napping at 9:30 for 45mins.She was getting slow to fall asleep at 9:30 am and it had got later and later over last few weeks.

Is it possible just to switch like this? Is nearly 10 months way too early for 1 nap? I guess my question is, when did your lo go to one nap and how did you make the change? DD is a textbook angel with the occassional bit of touchy!

TIA

Hi there,

Babies switch to one nap usually between 12-18 months I think.  If your DD dropped her catnap quite a while ago then she may well be ready for one nap.

How is she doing on the one nap?  Is she happy and thriving?  Is her night sleep still good?  I think there may be days when she'll need two naps during the transition, but as long as she's happy then I think she's ready!

My dd started to resist her morning nap around 10/11 months. I tried to persevere with 2 naps for a little while longer as I felt she was too young to go down to one nap. It got to the point however where because of the length and time of her morning nap her afternoon nap was affecting her going to bed at night. What I didn't want to do either was keep her morning nap and lose her afternoon one as the latter is the one you want to keep.

In the end just before she reached 12 months we transistioned over a week or so to 1 nap at around 12:30 - it wasn't too painful as she was ready for it and it meant putting her to bed at night settled back down again. I know a lot of babies don't go down to 1 nap until around 18 months but I think you have to take your lo's cues and as Colesmum said if she is happy then go with it especially as she is having a good 2-2.5 hours.

Hi Sam's mum and traci,
thanks for the advice! Sorry I've been so long in replying, we've had a bug on the pc so I've been offline! I've really missed it!

Amber has really happy on one nap a day for 5 days.... then melt down today! I've learnt that if she sleeps in till 8am then one nap seems okay, but if it is a 7am get up, which is more normal, she needs a cat nap of 30ish mins at about 9:30. I missed the sleep window today (we were out taking a friend to train station) and poor dd was very upset. I'm not going to beat myself up about it(which I tend to do alot) but just learn from it and not make that mistake again tomorrow.

thanks again!
