Avacado intolerance?
« on: February 05, 2006, 18:56:22 pm »
Hello,

I have been giving my lo food for about a month now.  I tried avacado last night to which I have an intolerance to, but dp loves.  After about five bites of the avacado/formula mixture he started turning red, couldn't breath and was gagging.  I ripped him out of his seat and was doing almost a baby heimlich while screaming at dp to get in the room.  As soon as I dp got in the room, ds threw up all over me.....  not just his five bites, but most of his milk... he had been nursed an hour before.  So I think it's safe to say the little guy also has an intolerance.  Since I'm new to the game could you please let me know if this is quite common for mama and lo to share allergies?  Also, have you heard of such a quick result?  I throw up quickly after eating it too.  Should I ask for testing for my dr or should i just not give it to ds anymore?  I don't have any other foods that bother me like avacados do.

TIA!

I did peak at most of the websites listed above, but most seem to deal with milk.

Being inexperienced with this myself, the research that I have done indicates that it is not uncommon for kids to have the same allergies as their parents.  My LO erupted with a beautiful red rash and hives that I noticed as I was wiping his chin, so I think a fast reaction isn't all that uncommon either.  Also, I took my DS to the DR about his milk allergy, and the dr didn't really do much except tell me not to give it to him again (umm...DUH!).  I posted a thread below about that and it seems like that is a fairly common dr response.

If you're interested in a "buddy" to discover food allergy stuff with, I think I"m not toomuch ahead of you in that game, and I'd love someone to freak out with. ;)

I'm sure someone else will have more helpful information...

Theresa,

Thanks for responding!  BTW, I'm a breastfeeding, cloth diapering mama too!

I found a website and I will post the article in another thread in this forum, but it is only on avocados and a connection iwth latex.  I'd be happy to share anything I find with you... buddy!   :D  Were you giving your lo just regular milk or formula?

Actually, it was macaroni and cheese I tried to give him.  Then we tried yogurt to see if he'd react to that too.  He did.  I've also smeared a bit of ice cream on his cheek and he reacted the same to that, so I'm pretty darn sure it's the dairy.  The only other thing he's reacted to are McDonald's french fries, and I just found out that they have dairy in them >:(.   I haven't actually given him any milk, and I'm going to wait for quite a while before I do.  I've been having a thrilling time trying to adjust my diet, because although I've never liked milk and it's always upset my stomach a bit, I've been fine with other dairy products.  I hope you've only got the avocado to deal with, and since you can't have it either, you shouldn't have to adjust your diet.  Weird about the latex connection though.  I guess you learn something new everyday. :-\

And it's so cool to find another bf'ing CD'ing momma!  Someone who won't think I'm a freak! yay! ;D

Jodie, answered your other post first.  No more avocados for your guy.  Way to scary of a reaction.  And please nag to get him tested for latex.  Simple blood test.  (Not to him, I know!)   ;)

One other thing to consider - and yes, it isn't uncommon for allergies to pass on from parent to child - is that avocados are, I think, a nightshade, same family as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes, and sometimes people who are allergic to one can be allergic to others in that family.

If I'm wrong about the nightshade thing, someone let me know?

Thank you everyone.  I would be interested to find out if all those foods are in the same family, cuz he has only had sweet potatoes and nothing else in that list.  I would hate to give him something that wouldn't agree iwth him again.  I will hold off on all those foods just in case, until i see his dr.

Thanks again.

Actually, sweet potatoes aren't related - I think they're in the same family as morning glories, come to think of it. :)

Wow, that is so interesting since my ped. had told me that avocado is one of the only foods in the world to which nobody is allergic. I wonder what else he had no idea about.................
