Naps have changed--why??
« on: February 05, 2006, 19:09:31 pm »
I have a 7.5 month old dd and all of a sudden, her naps have gone done from about an hour-1.5 hours to 30-40 minutes and she is crying MUCH more when we put her down.   Is it because she isn't quite tired yet?  I have followed BW advice by just following the "cues" of sleepiness (yawns, rubbing eyes, etc), but is she too old to go down as soon as the first yawn now?  Maybe I should keep her up longer?  Not sure how to handle this.  It has been very frustrating because now she is going down so many more times a day because I don't think she gets enough rest during her naps now.  Ugh.  PLEASE HELP!!!

Thank you!

Yes, cues start to get difficult at this age.  My DS will sometimes yawn after an hour being up!  Then he'll get a second wind.  At 7.5 months you should be having no more than 3 naps, most typically two naps around 9/9:30 and 2/2:30 for about 1:15 or longer.

If I remember correctly, at 7.5 months A time for my DS was 2.25, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5 approximately.

Babies can drop the catnap once they can stay awake 3+ hours before each sleep period.

7-9 months is a difficult age to guage awake times etc.  What time does DD wake in the morning?  If after 6:30, i would try and keep her up until 9 for first nap.  If you can give us an idea of her awake times we can be more helpful.

hugs to you.  I had a very hard time from 7-9 months!

Hi there,
Thank you so much for your reply.  It makes me feel so better knowing that I am not alone in this madness :)  Anyway, I am just picking my dd up from another half hour nap after screaming her head off!  I am thinking she may be teething, but didn't have any crankiness or crying until I put her down.  Then she just slept for a half hour and started screaming again.  Could it be separation anxiety??  She has never been like this so not sure what is happening.

Ok, to answer your question, my dd has been getting up lately at 6 am.  Also, when you say that they should have only 2.5 hours of A time, that would mean that her second nap would be probably at around 1:00 if she sleeps for an hour and a half during the first nap.  Not sure how to handle this if she doesn't sleep that 1.5 hours.  Should I keep her up until 2.  ugh.  very stressed right now...

THanks again for your help!

at this age you need to go by a combination of awake time, clock and cues.

If she wakes at 6, try for first nap around 8:15-8:30.  See how long she sleeps and then take the rest of the day from there.  Every day won't be the same unfortunately.  If you get a short nap ending at say 9:15, then you'll have to have her next nap by 11:45-12:00 (no later). Does she usually take a later afternoon catnap?  You likely won't be able to drop the catnap until she can stay up 3 hours like i said previously.

Yes, this time is also known for teething and SA...that's why it's such a fun age with respect to naps ;) :P

Could you please post a typical day...and maybe I could provide more guidance.

Thanks again for your response!  Btw, I JUST put my dd down after about 2.5 hours of A time, so we shall see how it goes.  She cried for about 2 minutes and now is just settling herself down so hopefully she will fall fast asleep soon.

ANyway, our typical day (the last couple of days) is:
6am wakeup
6:15-6:30 FF
8:00-8:40 Nap (this is prior to today)
9:00 feed her solids (not going very well)
10:30 FF
12:00 nap
12:30 wakeup
2:30 FF
3:30-4 "nap" wakeup crying hysterically
6:30 FF (and getting ready for bed)
6:50 sleep for the night  -and she sleeps through the night until around 6 am again when this whole thing starts over :)

just figured I would let you know, she woke up today after a half hour with a poopy diaper.  Nothing is ever easy.  Well, I figured I would do what you said and jsut put her down again at around noon.  (she woke up at 9:30).  UGH!!!  This has been so stressful especially since she has been sleeping so well during the day. Oh well.

Thanks again for your help!
