sudden night waking at 1 year
« on: February 05, 2006, 21:14:47 pm »
Daisy has always been a great sleeper, going through the night at 10 weeks with only the occasional night waking. For the past month she wakes up screaming in the middle of the night 5 nights out of 7 and it can take anything from 10mins to 1.5 hours to calm her down and get her back to sleep. Is this common at this age? She does have molars coming through, could it just be because she is teething and in pain. I have started giving her calpol before bed but it does not guarantee a good night sleep. She naps for 45mins to an 1 hour at 11am and for an hour at 3pm.  Is this just a stage or can i expect it only to get worse.

I think it's going on a bit late to be teeth,( amonth or so of waking I mean)
Have you got a night lite,if not she could just be a bit scared.
How long have you been giving her calpol? If its longer than about 4 days
then you need to stop as the body starts to want it and they wake up
( I know from experience :-[)
What's her routine like?
If she goes to be too late, then she could be waking up overtired
(again,experienced that as well)
Will look at the routine and see how it looks
In the meantime, try some gentle shhing and back rubbing which may
help

Could it be separation anxiety?  My 13 month old is also doing that but he's not screaming, just crying.  And he always slept through the night previously.  Sometimes, it takes 1.5 hours to get him back to sleep.  He will stop crying but I have to stay in the room with him.  It comes and goes too.  For example Sunday and Monday nights he needed me but Tuesday night he slept through.  It changes daily and yet my daytime routine is the same!  I thought teeth too, but like the comment above, it seemed to go on a  little long for teeth - and he would stop crying when I walked into the room. Anyways, consider if your child is clingy or needs you a lot during the day.  It could be separation anxiety.

Oops I shall stop the calpol but she is constantly teething, one breaks through and then another begins, she always has her fingers crammed into her mouth gnawing away.

her routine looks a bit like this:

8am wake up
8:15 milk (5oz) plus cereal and toast
11am nap (approx 45min - 1 hour)
12noon lunch, varied meals followed by yogurt,  water to drink
3pm nap (approx 1- 1.5 hour)
4pm tea, varied lighter meals, milk (3-5 oz) and fruit
6:30 bath
7:15 milk ( approx 8oz)
7:30 into bedroom for a cuddle and finish milk then sleep

Maybe she is getting too much sleep during the day. Do you think she could be hungry? She is very affectionate, crawling over to me for a cuddle, she is not really clingy. She sometimes cries when I leave the room, other times is happy to play on her own while i am out of the room.  Thank you for your advice.

I dont think she is getting too much sleep.  The naps sound good to me.  Does she have her supper at 4?  Maybe try 4:30 and she might eat more.  A good supper and then her milk before bed should do it.  It's worth a try.   But if it doesnt make a difference, it might just be a phase.  Wait it out- usually it'll change in 2 weeks.

thank you velvet, i will try her tea at 4:30 today. She slept through the night last night, and i gave her more tea so maybe that was the problem, thanks again.

I am in the same place. My 13month old is sleeping from 7.30 to 7.30 1 or 2 nights a week, other nights she wakes twice a night and is settled with a pat on the back. The worst nights, like last night, she was awake for 2 hrs. Stays lying down and stops crying when I go in but sreams when I leave. She will lie awake for 2 hrs quiet as long as I am in the room. Going a bit round the bend as can't do pu/pd which worked so well when she was younger. Thinking about trying walk in walk out.
